James Onyutta is a professional accountant, business leader, and microfinance expert from Uganda with over 17 years of international work experience in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Onyutta currently serves as the Managing Director of FINCA Uganda Limited.
As Managing Director, he leads an Executive Leadership Team dedicated to FINCA’s objective of creating a network of sustainable and scalable social enterprises that improve people’s lives.
Early Life and Education
James Onyutta holds a First Class Honors degree in Bachelor of Business and Management, BBA (Finance) from Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi, Uganda from 1998 to 2000.
He is a Certified Chartered Accountant with ACCA-UK having earned it from 2004 to 2009.
He is also an Alumnus of the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, where he is a Certified Expert in Risk Management.
James is a sports enthusiast who actively promotes the growth of volleyball in Uganda.
Career and Professional Work Experience
James Onyutta has over 17 years of experience in microfinance and banking. Since December 2016, he has served as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of FINCA Uganda Limited (MDI).
James was previously the CEO and Director of Musoni Kenya Limited, the world’s first institution to offer a cashless/branchless banking strategy. This was in Nairobi, Kenya, from October 2013 to December 2016.
He was in charge of guiding the institution’s transformation to a paperless, cashless, and data-driven microfinance banking model, establishing it as a pioneer in Kenyan financial services innovation.
He formerly worked with FINCA Africa subsidiaries in Uganda, Tanzania, and Malawi, most recently as Chief Finance Officer (CFO) in Uganda (September 2012 to September 2013) and Tanzania (June 2008 to August 2012).
He was a key member of the financial team responsible for revising FINCA International’s Global Subsidiaries Policy.
Prior to an Africa Region launch, he headed the project design and implementation team for FINCA Uganda’s Orbit Core Banking system.
He also helped FINCA Tanzania transition to a Microfinance Bank and supervised the post-implementation, training, and support of SIEM core banking in FINCA Malawi.
James Onyutta also held the position of Chief Accountant at FINCA Uganda Limited (MDI) from 2003 to 2007 and the Management Accountant at FINCA Malawi Limited from 2001 to 2003.
Achievements and Awards
James Onyutta has worked his way up from officer to CEO. His path motivates the staff he oversees, but more importantly, he has maintained the financial institution expansion despite the difficult economic climate.
FINCA Uganda, led by James Onyutta, is empowering its consumers by providing them with access to long-term financial solutions.
FINCA Uganda addressed the Covid-19 problem by establishing Tomorrow Is Here, a new customer service approach designed to improve customer service.
Under his direction, FINCA Uganda established an Education Trust/Scholarship Fund in January 2018 to give back to communities and build a legacy that will endow FINCA’s concepts and beliefs in perpetuity.
The education fund was established to assist children of less privileged clients in obtaining tertiary education (university and other institutes of higher learning) in order to better their future living standards.
He was also chosen by Business Focus as one of the top-performing CEOs in Uganda in 2022.
James has participated in ABF programmes and is an ABF Ninth Cohort Fellow.
James was chosen as a Committee Member of the Uganda Bankers Association on May 16, 2022.
