A section of Makerere University students on Friday arranged a surprise party for the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) suspended chair Dr Deus Kamunyu for standing firm in defending his values and MUASA in particular.
Danson Twesigomwe the Guild clerk Makerere University said that Management has turned out to be dictators in that whoever criticises their injustices stands suspension.
Adding that there is no more freedom of speech at the institution
These students’ a warded a cake to Dr Kamunyu to cut and they celebrated together. They were dressed up in white caps while holding placards with written words reading “where is my suspension,” and shouting ‘Nawangwe must go’.
Soon after, they unveiled a campaign to stand in solidarity with suspended members of Makerere including students’.
Relatedly, these dramatic students requested Dr Kamunyu to be strong and fearless when it comes to protection of his rights and values from this unfair Management of Makerere University.
While responding to his suspension letter filed by Prof Barnabas Nawangwe last week the 18th of Jan 2019 immediately after suspension Kamunyu mentioned that his suspension was harsh, vague, in bad faith and against the constitution.
“It even undermines my rights as a citizen to have access to my official home, public building and related services. The letter unfairly portrays me as a criminal, but you know me better than that. In the circumstances, my lawyers, friends and all concerned citizens are studying the suspension details with a view of giving appropriate advice. My next step will be made known to you soon.”
It should be noted that by Saturday 26th January, staff members are still striking demanding the removal of the suspension of other staff members and students by Prof Barnabas Nawangwe.
