After breaking news of a riot at Makerere University on Monday and Tuesday that left studies jeopardized and institution property destroyed, the government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo threatened that the government could handover the Wandegeya based university to the UPDF army in case the current management fails to handle and settle the issues at Makerere University.
While talking at debate organized at Makerere University School of Law named “Militarizing Public Service in Uganda – a solution to governance crisis? |” on Monday, the outspoken Ofwono Opondo referred to the constitution and said that it is constitutional to have the army run institutions of government to save them from collapsing.
“There is no military here but students are running away. You can’t calculate numbers of students here. You can’t calculate revenue you get from students. Now, wouldn’t it be better if the military was seconded to come and run Makerere Universiy for you?” he asked.
Ofwono is known for bringing controversial discussions in Uganda news most especially during the frontline TV show hosted at Kamwokya based NBS TV.
