Police arrests activists who want Betty Nambooze released

Police have arrested youth activists who were calling for the release of Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze who was recently arrested in connection with her social media statements. Nambooze is however hospitalized at Kirrudu Hospital in Makindye.

The FDC youths; Habib Buwembo, Juma Kabotongo and Yasin Galiwango were arrested at the Parliamentary gate as they attempted to forcefully access the premises in a bid to serve Speaker Rebecca Kadaga with a petition demanding for the release of Betty Nambooze who is under arrest but receiving treatment in Kiruddu Hospital. The three are currently detained at Central Police Station (CPS).

It is now over a week since Nambooze was arrested for offensive communication on social media before and during the assassination of Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga who was killed early this month.

Since her arrest, Betty Nambooze fell sick and her lawyers and close relatives have pleaded with police to release her so that she finds better medical attention in a private facility of her choice. Police however, insist that doctors are yet to find need for Nambooze to seek further treatment saying facilities in Mulago can accommodate her situation.

Chris Obore, Director, Communication and Public Affairs at Parliament said in our latest Uganda news that whereas petitions to the Speaker are much welcome from the public, dramatizing the act is unacceptable.
