Regina Mukiibi Mugongo, the founder of Uganda Funeral Services has succumbed to the deadly COVID-19.

Uganda Funeral Services founder, Regina Mukiibi Mugongo, tested positive for COVID-19 last week, but the situation deteriorated on Monday and she died at Entebbe International Airport as she was being evacuated.

According to a close source in the Funeral Services who preferred to remain anonymous, Mukiibi breathed her last on Tuesday afternoon, while being evacuated to Nairobi for further management.

“She tested positive for COVID-19 last week, but the situation deteriorated on Monday. She died at Entebbe International Airport as she was being evacuated out of the country,” a close source disclosed.

Her death, however, comes at a time when Uganda has since registered over 900 deaths from the virus. The health ministry Monday announced 33 new deaths from tests done on 27 June 2021.

This pushed the death tally to 989. The ministry also announced 345 new cases pushing the cumulative confirmed cases in the country to 79,434. 

As of today, there are currently 1,180 active cases on admission at different health centres across the country with cumulative recoveries of 52, 382.

Who is Regina Mukiibi?

Regina Mukiibi is the founder of Uganda Funeral Services, the first-ever of its kind in the country. Mukiibi with the help of her late brother Freddie Mukiibi registered the company in 1994. 

Years down the road, the company has grown from scratch scooping notable awards both locally and internationally including the most recent one in 2013 when she has scooped the Phenomenal Woman of Funeral Services Trailblazer Award, which she picked up from the US-based 100 Black Women of Funeral Service, during their convention in Austin, Texas in October 2013.

Other accolades include the Best Ugandan Innovator in the senior category for the year 2004, Best Woman Entrepreneur 2007 and Regional Entrepreneur, Uganda Investment Authority Woman Entrepreneur of Year – 2007 and Investor of the Year National Award – 2009, among others.

She was also recognized as one of the top 50 brands when Uganda celebrated 50 years of independence in 2012.

Venturing into the funeral business, Mukiibi first worked as an accountant with the now-defunct Uganda Commercial Bank, She also operated a tour and travel company before later switching her focus to start the funeral management business.
