Family background

Muhammad Nsereko was born to Alhaj Abdul Nsereko, a seasoned journalist with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation and a former radio host on Radio Uganda.

Marriage and Relationships

After supposedly dating for two years, Shamila introduced Hon. Muhammad Nsereko to her parents making her his third wife, on November 25, 2023, in a lavish Kwanjula ceremony.

Before that, on August 27, 2021, Nsereko was first introduced by his long-term fiancée, Fatia L Amanda, a former music artist living in the UK to her parents in Lutembe, Entebbe Road.

Fatia, who is rumoured to have dated Nsereko for four years became his second wife.

Hon. Nsereko has four children with his first former wife, Mrs. Nsereko.

Abdul Nsereko, Zaituni Nsereko, Fatumah Nansereko, and Nuriat Nakamatte Nsereko are the children’s names.

Nsereko disclosed that, per his Muslim faith, he had three official introductions by now, but he still had a spot for another woman.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Since 2007, Muhammad Nsereko, a member of the Uganda Bar Association and a certified professional lawyer, has been a partner in the legal practice of “Nsereko, Mukalazi and Company Advocate.”

Nsereko also headed the Kampala Central Land Committee from 2006 to 2010.

Political Career

In 2011, Muhammad Nsereko entered politics as a candidate for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

Nsereko ran and won the 2011 NRM candidacy for the Kampala Central Division Constituency. From 2011 until 2016, he was a member of the 9th Parliament.

He took over for Hon. Erias Lukwago, who resigned to run for mayor of Kampala City.

He was also a member of the NRM Central Executive Committee in addition to being the party’s Deputy Secretary for Legal Affairs.

As a politician, Nsereko started to publicly criticize the NRM system of government. Thus, his outright rejection of the NRM party’s initiatives came before his removal from both the party as an NRM rebel (along with three other MPs) and the parliament.

The Constitutional Court decided 4-1 in September 2013 that the four MPs should leave parliament while the court considered whether or not they should remain in office.

On September 10, 2013, the Supreme Court, however, decided 6-1 three days later that the MPs should remain in parliament until the Constitutional Court concluded that the four MPs should leave parliament.

On October 30, 2015, the Supreme Court reversed that ruling, allowing Nsereko and his colleagues to into parliament as independent MPs.

Nsereko was re-elected as an independent member of parliament to the 10th parliament from 2016 to 2021. He persisted in advocating for his position that parliament should not revise the Constitution to remove the presidential age limit, which he and his colleagues lost when the Constitution was changed.

Nsereko ran for deputy speaker of parliament in 2016, but NRM’s Jacob Oulanyah defeated him.

In 2021, Muhammad Nsereko was re-elected to the 11th parliament as the MP for Kampala Central Division.

Nsereko received 16,998 votes compared to National Unity Platform’s Fred Nyanzi’s 15,975 votes, and the Electoral Commission pronounced him the winner of the Kampala Central MP seat.

However, Fred Nyanzi brought him before the court in an electoral petition contesting his victory.

Nyanzi cited Nsereko and the Electoral Commission (EC) for electoral malpractice; nonetheless, Nsereko prevailed in the High Court case.

Nsereko ran again for the Speaker position after winning the general elections in 2021, but Anita Among (NRM) defeated him.

Controversies

Through their attorneys, Kampala Associated Advocates, Aisha Trading Limited hauled Hon. Nsereko into the Commercial Division of the High Court.

This was over a shs3bn fake land deal including vehicles from an investor with promises to deliver titled land in Banda but failing to keep the promise.

After claims of fraud regarding Crane Bank made headlines in 2012, Nsereko found himself in the spotlight for a while.

Nevertheless, Crane Bank chose to settle out of court, indicating that they were no longer interested in pursuing the issue.

Along with three other NRM members of parliament, Nsereko was expelled from the NRM party in April 2013 due to his open defiance of the party. Along with his other three colleagues, they were named the ‘Rebel MPs’.
