Controversies
In June 2021, Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo who served as Deputy President and a member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) was expelled from the party after being appointed Minister in Museveni’s government.
Patrick Amuriat Oboi, the party’s president, said in a statement posted on the party’s Facebook timeline that Ssebugwawo accepted President Museveni’s appointment and thus renounced not only her membership in the party but also her leadership position.
In April 2022, the media apologized to Joyce after falsely announcing that she was in a critical health state. They had published a news story claiming that State Minister for ICT, Joyce Ssebugwawo was having health issues whereby her health was deteriorating while in Dubai for the 2020 Expo.
“We have since established that this was not the case, which we were able to ascertain and confirm when we met Ssebugwawo, who was clearly in excellent health. We discovered her in her office, safe and sound, with nothing to indicate or imply she had previously been ill. As a result, we retract what we previously reported and portrayed about her. We also apologize to her and express our sincere regret for any confusion or anxiety our prior reporting may have caused.” They reported.
In January 2022, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine, President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) revealed that former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Deputy President Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo routinely leaked meeting secrets to a central government source.
Bobi Wine claimed in a lengthy New Year’s message that his camp and several opposition parties tried numerous times to form a unity force, but that certain people within the same opposition frustrated the process.
He quoted that, they later discovered that, despite being the Deputy President of a major opposition party, Joyce had been in contact with the regime all along as evidenced from one of their most recent and crucial meetings to discuss unity that took place at her house.
