She earned her spot on the Ugandan Olympic team for the 2020 Summer Games in June 2021.

Surprisingly, Esther got a ticket for the longer 5000-meter race at Atletiekbaan Brakkenstein in the Netherlands’ Nijmegen Global Athletics Meet in May 2021.

On 20th July 2019, Esther Chebet had earlier participated in the 5000 m race and finished in 15:18.05 at Heusden-Zolder in Belgium.

On 29th May 2021, she finished behind Australian Matt Doyle in second place over the 12-and-a-half laps in a personal best time of 15:04.89 seconds.

According to her manager Jurrie van der Velden, she virtually ran at Olympic Games qualification time the entire race, making her the girl who won always in the lead like a great pacer.

After Stella Chesang and the holder of the national record, Sarah Chelangat, Chebet is the third Ugandan woman to qualify for the Tokyo Games over the 5000 m distance.

However, Uganda’s hopes of winning the 2022 Women’s Olympics 5000m race vanished after all three athletes failed to finish in the top five or with the best time during the first and second heats.

Esther Chebet made a fast start in heat two before losing steam and finishing in 12th place in 15:11:47. Segay Gudaf of Ethiopia won heat 2 with a time of 14:55:54. Hellen Obiri of Kenya came in second in a time of 14:55:57.
