Who is Immaculate Chemutai? Flash Uganda Media looks at her biography, age, husband, family, tribe, relationship with Martin Okoth Ochola, career, the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, 2022 World Athletics Championships, and the early life and education of the Ugandan marathon runner.

Immaculate Chemutai is a marathon runner also known as a track and field athlete from Uganda. 

She participated in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. In 2022, she took part in the women’s marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. 

Immaculate Chemutai is also currently an Assistant Inspector of Police after being promoted from Corporal in 2021 by the Inspector General of Police, John Martins Okoth Ochola

Early life and Education

Immaculate Chemutai was born on 2 December 1987.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Immaculate Chemutai’s athletic career can be traced as far as 2009 when she competed in the half marathon on 22nd March 2009 at Metz, France and recorded a time of 1:16:01. 

On 28th March 2009, she competed in the 10-kilometre race at Roanne, France and finished in 35:21. In the same year on 24th May, she achieved a running time of 2:54:02 in the Marathon competition in Luxembourg.

Chemutai’s major event was the marathon, on 23rd January 2011, she finished in 2:44:42 in Khon Kaen, Thailand. On 29th April 2012, she finished in 2:45:07 at Albi, France. 

On 20th October 2013, she finished her race with a finishing time of 2:40:42 in Val-de-Reuil, France. And then at Taipei City on 23rd February 2014, she finished in a time of 2:44:57. 

On 24th September 2017, Chemutai finished the marathon at 2:44:15 at Tours, France and in 2:46:52 at Jakarta, Indonesia on 28th October 2018. In 2019, she ran 2:42:08 at Gianyar, Indonesia on 08th September. 

Chemutai has continuously participated in the MTN Kampala Marathon. In 2012, she finished in first place and in 2014, she finished in sixth place. She went on to finish in third place in 2018. 

On April 11, 2021, Immaculate Chemutai finished the Xiamen Marathon at 2:29:09 to create a new personal best and reach the Olympic qualifying time. 

She was then officially confirmed as a member of Uganda’s Olympic team for the postponed 2020 Tokyo Games in May 2021. In the Women’s marathon, she finished in a time of 2:32:23 in the sixteenth position at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

On 18th July 2022, she competed in the finals for the 2022 World Athletics Championships held at Autzen Complex, Eugene, Oregon although she did not finish the race. 

At 26 kilometres, Chemutai quit the race, joining a few other women who did not complete it. Among the women who quit were Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich who pulled out with stomach issues and also the Ethiopian duo of Ashete Bekere and Ababel Yeshaneh. 

Gotytom Gebreselase of Ethiopia finished the race in 2:18:11 making her the winner. She was followed by Judith Jeptum Korir (Kenya) in 2:18:20 and Lonah Salpeter (Israel) in 2:20:18.

On 28th August 2022, Chemutai competed in the Maybank Marathon in Bali, Indonesia and finished in 1st position with a time of 2:42:32. 

This gave her two victories at the yearly open road women’s marathon competition. However, from 2:42:8 in 2019, her Maybank Marathon finishing time has slowed by 24 seconds.

She nevertheless bagged her cash prize of Rp200,000,000 (MAD 142,779) from Widya Permana, the Maybank Marathon project director.

At a time of 2:32:41 at the Buriram Marathon on February 9, 2020, Immaculate Chemutai established a new national record for the Ugandan women’s marathon.

She placed 16th in the women’s Summer Olympics marathon in 2021, which was the best finish ever for Uganda.

Immaculate Chemutai’s personal best times in outdoor games include;

  1. 34:48 in the 10 Kilometres competition at Lambersart, France on 22nd September 2013
  2. 1:13:28 in the 20 Kilometres competition at Ceret, France on 15th September 2013
  3. 1:15:39 in the Half Marathon at Vannes, France on 09th September 2017
  4. 2:28:30 in the Marathon at Abu Dhabi (UAE) on 26th November 2021. 
  5. Her outdoor games season-best time is 2:42:33 which she recorded in the Marathon at Bali, Indonesia on 28th August 2022.
