Betty Aol Ochan was born on 28th November 1958, in the Gulu district, Northern region of Uganda.
Ochan attended Sacred Heart Secondary School for her high school education. She then went to Makerere University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1981.
In 2006, she received a Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies from Gulu University. And then she proceeded to attain her Master’s degree in Development Studies from Uganda Martyrs University.
Betty Ochan also holds several certificates in rural development, social work and leadership from local and international institutions.
Career and Professional work experience

Betty Ochan is a former leader of the opposition in the Parliament of Uganda having been appointed by Patrick Amuriat in August 2018.
She has held various cabinet positions in the government, including Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, and Minister of Local Government.
Betty was a secondary school teacher from 1981 to 1990. She spent half of that period at Layibi college and the rest at Awere secondary school.
She then joined ACORD-Gulu, a Kenya-based non-profit organization from 1990 up to 1995. She worked in their offices which were located in Gulu as a Rural Development worker.
From 1995 to 1997, she worked at St. Mauritz Gulu as a Program officer before becoming the Local Councilor 5 for the Gulu district between 1997 and 2006.
Betty then joined parliament in 2006 on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket as MP for the Gulu district.
