Early Life and Education
Awor Betty Engola also known as Betty Awori Engola was born on December 24, 1960, in Apac District, Northern Uganda.
She is married to the Senior Presidential Advisor for the Lango sub-region, Sam Engola. She is also a mother to Eunice Engola, the Foreign Service officer at Uganda Embassy in Brussels, Belgium.
She finished her Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) at Shimon Demonstration School in 1974.
She then received her Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) in 1978 from St Joseph’s Girls School in Nsambya.
Awori graduated from Tororo Girls School with an Uganda Advanced Certificate in Education in 1981.
She then enrolled at Makerere University in 1984 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Arts in Social Science.
Career and Professional Work Experience
Awor Betty Engola was a Governing Council Member at Uganda Technical College, Lira from 2009 to 2010.
She also served on the board of National Agricultural Advisory Services from 2005 to 2008.
From 1986 to 1987, she worked as a Commercial Officer for the Uganda Advisory Board of Trade.
She also worked as a Foreign Trade Officer at the Ministry of Tourism, Trade, and Industry from 1988 to 2001.
She has been a Member of the Ugandan Parliament since 2016, when she won the general elections with 46,404 votes against Auma Kenny of Uganda People’s Congress, Ajok Lucy and Amek Mary Grace, both Independent candidates.
In 2021, she contested against Achola Susan Engola of Uganda People’s Congress and Adie Rebecca Moro, an independent candidate and she also won the elections with 28,002 votes. Achola garnered 24,761 votes and Adie Rebecca Moro received 1,185 votes, both losing the elections.
Achievements and Awards
Awori Betty Engola serves as a member of the Ugandan Parliament’s Committee on Science and Technology.
She attended the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development’s Fourteenth Session in Nairobi, Kenya, from July 17 to 22, 2016.
Awori also contributed to the structure of the Apac District Local Government Budget Framework Paper.
She is a member of the Committee on Trade, Tourism and Industry.
She is also a former member of the Committee of Public Service & Local Government.
Hon. Betty Engola gave the controversial 20 million COVID-19 money to the District Task Force. She had earlier on donated 1.5 million to the task force of Apac District.
She also donated 20 cartons of bar soap, 20 10-litre jerry cans of hand wash, 350 hand masks, and 50 packs of hand gloves, to health centre II’s in Apac District.
She donated five hundred thousand to cater for the transport of the teachers who conduct lessons on Radio Apac FM.
Controversies
In January 2023, Hon. Awor blamed some district members for clashing, which she feared would harm the party’s growth in the district. She had urged the NRM general secretary and other party officials to tackle the issue in order to boost party unity.
