It’s not uncommon to find online searches about which sim card prefix code belongs to a certain network in Uganda. Here, you’ll find a list of the Ugandan MTN and Airtel Simcard prefix codes.
The two largest mobile network providers in Uganda are MTN and Airtel. They offer voice packages for calling loved ones, internet bundles for browsing the web, and mobile banking with MoKash and Airtel Money, among other services.
Almost every Ugandan knows about Airtel and MTN because the two networks have been around for quite some time. At every little stop, there’s an MTN or Airtel-branded red or yellow sign; some signs feature both colours.
Let’s get straight into Uganda’s MTN and Airtel Simcard prefix codes.
Prefixes are the group of numbers that appear before a telephone number’s country and area codes. The phone numbers in Uganda are made up of 12 numbers, which are divided into groups of three.
So, to call Uganda from a mobile phone, dial country code + area code + a five to six-digit number.
076 –The newest MTN Simcard prefix code

The 076 prefixes were given to MTN Uganda to add to its current family of number ranges, which also includes the 077, 078, 031, and 039 prefixes. The Uganda Communications Commission, the industry regulator, approved the new number range. Additionally, it is offered to prepaid subscribers.
Existing numbers have not been impacted by this, and consumers can keep using MTN services.
Customers visit the nearest MTN Shops or Duukas with their national ID to purchase a new SIM card for the standard price of Shs2000 to obtain a new number within the new 0760 range.
MTN –078, 077, 076, 031, 039
After using up the amount that was allocated, MTN will stop issuing the 077 and 078 coded numbers.
For more than 20 years, the mobile network provider has used the two codes. MTN will discontinue the previously accessible codes for prepaid users beginning with 077 before launching the 078.
Other codes run by the telecom are 031 and 039. According to MTN, a request for a new code has already been approved by the Uganda Communications Commission and is now accessible to brand-new prepaid clients.
The MTN no longer offers the 077 and 078 versions. This indicates the telecom’s subscriber base has been growing quickly over time.
Airtel – 070, 075, 074, 020.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is tasked with creating, establishing, amending, and enforcing a national numbering plan and allocating block numbers by Section 4(g) of the Uganda Communications Act, Cap. 106 Laws of Uganda.
In a multi-carrier context, numbering provides the tools to identify customers and service providers, as well as the ability to route and charge calls.
Following proof that Airtel Uganda had used 75% of the most recent blocks—in this case, 070 and 075—allocated to them, UCC gave Airtel Uganda the extra blocks of numbers.
Additionally, Airtel was obliged to provide data on customer growth rates, growth projections, and assurances that its numbers will continue to operate for the ensuing 12 months.
Toll-free – 0800

By law, calls to 0800 numbers from both fixed and mobile phones are free. UIFN’s “00800” typically costs money from mobile phones and is free from fixed lines. Due to the lack of legal enforcement of UIFN access, some phone providers choose to disregard the requirement.
+256- Is the Uganda Country Code

The plus sign (+) or double zero (00) must be typed before the country code and local phone number when dialling someone or a business in Uganda or overseas. The phone number is followed in this instance by +256.
