Manoj Murali is an Indian Marketing and Business leader, sales operations and strategist and very highly skilled in management operations.

Murali is the current Managing Director of Airtel Uganda. 

Early Life and Education

Manoj Murali was born in India.

He earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Instrumentation and Electronics from the University of Poona in Pune between 1989 and 1993.

Manoj also earned a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management in Pune between 1993 and 1995.

He additionally completed an Advanced Management Programme at both CCL and INSEAD SG.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Airtel Uganda announced the hiring of Manoj Murali as its new Managing Director by Airtel Africa in October 2020. Manoj succeeded V.G. Somasekhar, who returned to India for redeployment and remained associated with the Bharti Airtel Group.

Manoj’s appointment reflected his extensive experience in the industry.

Manoj has held several positions and worked across geographies in India, the Corporate Office, and the International operations of Sri Lanka, Seychelles, and the Channel Islands. 

His most recent position with Bharti Airtel Group was the Chief Executive Officer of Tamil Nadu and Kerala before being appointed the Managing Director of Airtel Uganda. 

Prior to this, he held various positions within the system, including Chief Operating (Executive) Officer in Rajasthan and Business Head (Chief Operating Officer) in Andhra Pradesh (December 2011 to April 2014).

Manoj previously worked at Crompton Greaves Limited, where he was in charge of managing and increasing the Lighting Business Group’s Profit Centre activities in Karnataka.

During his eight-year tenure with Bharti, he held positions in the Sales& Marketing function as well as customer service in the Tamil Nadu and Kerala circles.

He joined Kerala Circle in January 2001 as Vice President of Operations. He was responsible for customer service for the East-West Hub and International Operations. He was also the Zonal Business Director commencing in October 2001 at Airtel.

Achievements and Awards

Manoj Murali has extensive experience in team leadership, vendor management, Key Account Management, telecommunications, business development, customer service, and sales operations and strategies.

During Manoj Murali’s time as Managing Director, Airtel Uganda introduced Airtel Cares, a community-supporting project focused on agriculture, health, and education. 

Airtel and EzyAgric also formed a partnership to promote agribusiness in Uganda. The alliance was to assist farmers in adopting technology through mobile phones in order to gain access to important information on agricultural inputs, market access, insurance alternatives, marketing, and weather information, among other factors to aid in decision-making.

Airtel Uganda has also announced the launch of eSIM (embedded SIM) technology. Customers will be able to access the same capabilities as those who use a physical SIM card with a digital SIM. This new technology has various advantages over old SIM cards, including the fact that it is quick and easy to set up online.

In May 2023, Airtel Uganda also altered its strapline from “the smartphone network” to “a reason to imagine” to kick-start a campaign aimed to inspire young people to realise their dreams.
