Eleanor Nabwiso, also known as Eleanor Vaal Nansibo Nabwiso, is an actress, producer, director, scriptwriter, and television personality from Uganda. 

She is best known as the director of The Hostel, Sanyu (2021), Rain (2016), Beneath the Lies – The Series, and Bed of Thorns (2019). 

In 2015, she and her husband, Mathew Nabwiso, co-founded the production firm Nabwiso Films. The business has produced a number of popular films, including “Bed of Thorns” and “Rain,” both of which received approval from critics for their quality and authenticity.

Eleanor Nabwiso was born on February 24, 1989, at Sir Albert Cook Mengo Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, to Rev. Dr Kefa Sempangi, a retired politician, and Jane Frances Nakamya.

Nabwiso is the third child in a family of five. Her father started the Presbyterian Church in Uganda, and he was also a key figure in The Africa Foundation’s ministry to street children in Uganda in 1971.

Nabwiso finished primary school at Namagunga Girls’ Primary School.

She then enrolled at Seeta High School Mukono to complete her O and A Levels. She later enrolled in Sikkim Manipal University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in information technology.

Eleanor Nabwiso is married to fellow actor and singer Mathew Nabwiso. They met in 2010 while filming The Hostel, a popular drama series in which they both starred.

On October 20, 2013, she married Mathew in holy marriage in a private wedding ceremony in Kampala. Eleanor Nabwiso and her husband Nabwiso have four children.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Eleanor Nabwiso began her performing and film-producing career as a teenager. During her Senior Six break, she was chosen to host the weekend show K-Files on WBS TV.

She starred in The Hostel, a Ugandan drama series about the life of university students in their dormitories created by Sabiiti “MMC” Moses and Emanuel “BUUBA” Egwel. The show went viral in Uganda, propelling her to fame as one of the cast’s most stunning actresses.

She played the role of Bursar in Kyaddala, a pan-African television drama series created by Emmanuel Ikubese for Emmanuel Ikubese Films and Reach a Hand Uganda. 

She played Jackie Mpanga in the TV series #Family (Hashtag Family), and also featured in Beneath The Lies, a Ugandan television drama-mystery series created by Nana Kagga.

She also played Nancy in Macpherson and Lynnet in Watch Over Me.

Eleanor Nabwiso served as a judge for the 2021 Dona I Cinema International Film Festival. She also served in the roles of a Programme and Events Producer for the 2019 Euro East Africa Film Festival as well as a Coordinator for the 2019 American Film Showcase Workshop. 

Achievements and Awards

Eleanor Nabwiso is an actress, film producer, and director who has won numerous awards.

She has appeared in several theatrical plays, short films, feature films, television programmes, documentaries, and infomercials. 

Nabwiso’s work has won several awards from the Uganda Film Festival, where her film ‘Bed of Thorns’ won Best Script/Screenplay, and the London ArtHouse Film Festival where it was named Best Women’s Rights Film in 2019.

In 2017, she won Best Actress for her role in Rain at the Festicab International Film Festival, Best Producer for Best Feature Film at the Pearl of Africa International Film Festival, and Best Film in Africa and the Middle East at the Nuren Film Festival. 

She has also been nominated for a number of other honours. Sanyu TV series (2021), Heartbeat (2020), Prickly Roses (2020), Speak Up TV series (2019), Live Your Dream TV series (2018), and Hashtag Family TV series (2017) are among her previous works.

Nabwiso is an outspoken activist and philanthropist. She is a strong supporter of gender equality and women’s rights, and she has utilised her platform to raise awareness about topics like domestic violence, sexual assault, and the need for girls’ education. 

She created the “Girls in Film” project in 2018, with the goal of empowering young women in the film business through mentorship, training, and networking opportunities.

Eleanor Nabwiso has a net worth of 174 million Ugandan shillings and earns 28 million Ugandan shillings per year through her production company, Nabwiso Films, which produced the blockbuster film Bed of Thorns.
