Agnes Akite Opio, popularly known as Agnes Akite, is a Ugandan actress and comedian.
She rose to prominence as Arach in the hit NTV series The Hostel before venturing into stand-up comedy in 2014.
She is one of the faces of the Comedy Files at Theatre Labonita, as well as the Queens of Comedy, an all-girl comedy group.
Early Life and Education

Agnes Akite was born in the early 1980s in what was formerly known as the Nakawa Quarters. Agnes is the fifth of nine children with roots in Northern Ugandan.
She was born to a Langi father, Anthony Opio and an Acholi mother, Hellen Opio. Her childhood was spent in Namanve and Kitintale.
Akite is a devout Catholic who is deeply committed to her parish, Our Lady of Africa, Mbuya where she was baptised and received all of her sacraments.
She was a shy child who kept a low profile throughout school, so it came as a surprise when she became a comedian.
Agnes Akite attended Our Lady of Africa Nursery School and subsequently St Kizito Primary School in Bugolobi for her primary education.
She then attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Gayaza before attending Naalya SS Namugongo for her O-levels. At Our Lady of Good Counsel Gayaza, she was a popular athlete although she did not pursue that path later in life.
She then attended St Lawrence’s Creamland campus for her A-levels education. Akite afterwards enrolled in Makerere University’s Tourism programme and graduated with a second-class upper degree in 2007.
Her parents detested comedy when she first started, calling it a waste of time. It wasn’t until her breakthrough that they began to consider it a job.
Agnes Akite is married to former Uganda Rugby Cranes player-turned-coach Brian Makalama. They have been married since 2010 and together they have two children.
Career and Professional Work Experience

Agnes Akite Opio got her start in the popular local TV series ‘The Hostel’ as Arach. Ann Kansiime and Dan Omara urged her to pursue stand-up comedy as a career because she had a natural wit for it.
Akite formerly worked as a front desk manager at a Luzira office. She was hunting for another employment at the time when she was given a role at The Hostel. Her character was an ignorant young woman who had followed her boyfriend to Kampala.
In 2014, she made her debut as a comedian at the Punchliners’ performance at the former Waikiki, Centenary Park, which was similar to the baby class of Comedy Files at Labonita. However, after appearing there once, she was transferred to Labonita, where she has been performing ever since.
Akite did not charge at the start of her comic career. She claims to have done it for a decade out of pure passion.
Achievements and Awards

Agnes Akite is one of Uganda’s top female comedians. She distinguishes herself with her unique brand of clean (non-violent), observational everyday life comedy, quickly gaining followers.
At the ‘Africa Laughs Season Four’, she obtained another breakout with her epic performance.
