Career and Professional Work Experience

Ayoo Tonny

The unjust treatment of his community motivated Ayoo Tonny to leave his teaching career and enter politics in order to effect change.

He only taught for six months at Apac SS before entering politics in 1998. Ayoo served as a councillor representing multiple electorates in Apac district until 2011 when he decided to pursue a higher position.

He ran for Kwania County representative on the NRM ticket in the 2011 general elections and was elected to Uganda’s ninth Parliament (2011 to 2016).

He took over for Anokbonggo Willy Washington, the former Kwania County UPC representative from the eighth parliament.

He ran again and was elected to the tenth parliament as well.

Tonny Ayo also won the National Resistance Movement party primary elections in September 2020 to keep his place in Parliament. After receiving 12,751 votes, he won by a landslide margin of 84.7%.

Ayo’s closest challenger, Oguti Geoffrey, came in second with 1,921 votes, or 12.8% and Mr. Okek Erick came in last with 383 votes or 2.5%.

Ayoo Tonny received 8,216 votes in the 2021 General Elections, defeating his other competitors; Omara Innocent David of the Uganda People’s Congress, Adiga Odur Andrew of the Forum for Democratic Change, Okello Jimmy Emmanuel Ecum, Adupa Patrick Nelson, Oguti Geoffrey Ojeda, and Ogwal Emmanuel Agweno, all of whom ran as Independent candidates.

Controversies

MP Ayoo is one of a new breed of ‘rebel’ MPs who have campaigned for change inside the NRM and even urged Museveni not to run in the 2016 elections.

It is alleged that on February 12, 2022, Tony Ayo, the area MP for Kwania County, hired a witch doctor named Peter Ogwang to perform a ritual at his home in Obolo Cani village after the theft of his eight head of cattle.

The rituals resulted in the poisoning of three people, including the deceased Mike Odure, Innocent Okello, and another only identified as Okello.

Tony Ayo, who denied any involvement in the operation, confirmed hearing about it after it happened, claiming he was not even at home at the time.

Ayo went on to say that the last time he complained about animals being stolen from his home was in 2016 when thieves stole 27 cows and 40 goats, which is why he stopped taking care of goats.
