Baatom Ben Koryang is a Ugandan politician and a community development worker.

Hon. Baatom currently serves in the eleventh Ugandan Parliament as the Member of Parliament for Dodoth West Constituency, Karenga District.

Baatom is also a National Resistance Movement (NRM) political party member.

Early Life and Education

Baatom Ben Koryang was awarded an Irish Aid fellowship in 2010 – 2011 to pursue a Master’s in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development at University College Dublin.

This prompted him to take a break from leading a team of community development workers in Kaabong District Local Government, Uganda so as to pursue the degree.

Koryang had learned about the fellowship before applying in 2005, despite the fact that he lacked the qualifying experience thus failing to go through.

He then continued to work with the District and applied again in 2009, after gaining more than five years of service experience through fieldwork and community engagement in development activities.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Before entering politics, Hon. Baatom Ben Koryang served as a Senior District Community Development Officer in Kaabong District Local Government, Uganda.

He won the 2020 NRM primaries for the Dodoth West Constituency representative with 2,962 votes beating out Simon Lokodo who received 2,632 votes.

In the 2021 General Elections, Baatom Ben Koryang ran for Constituency Representative of Dodoth West and again won with 5,498 votes.

He defeated Simon Lokodo, the State Minister for Ethics and Integrity, who ran as an Independent after losing in the NRM primaries and received 3,686 votes.

Lokong Daniel, another Independent candidate, received 607 votes also losing the elections.

Baatom Ben Koryang took over from Simon Lokodo, who had held the seat of Dodoth West Parliamentary representative since 2006.

Achievements and Awards

Baatom Ben Koryang is a community development worker that is passionate about rural development work and is interested in livelihood and food security programmes that aim to improve rural transformation.

He possesses further skills in development networking, conceptualising ideas, developing, starting and project coordination.

Controversies

Baatom Ben Koryang is an outspoken person who is always saying his opinions about different issues resulting in some controversial talks like these;

When President Museveni said that Uganda would soon achieve middle-income status, Hon. Ben Koryang tasked UBOS with explaining why they deceived the President and how they arrived at the decision to designate the country as middle-income.

According to Koryang, based on the statistical data of the IMF, Uganda had not attained middle-income status however UBOS said Uganda had thus he questioned what the truth was.

Delays in settling the murder case of former Deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Joan Kagezi, who was gunned down by unknown assailants on 30 March 2015 in Kiwatule prompted Members of Parliament to doubt the DPP’s competency.

According to Hon. Baatom Ben Koryang, the DPP’s approach to high-profile murder cases is lacking and inadequate. He claimed that when a high-profile murder occurred, the DPP always rushed to make arrests just to show people that they were working but nothing more.
