Early Life & Family Background

Dr. Kenneth Omona was born on 16th August, 1974, in Kaberamaido District in eastern Uganda, Teso sub-region.

Having been born to Acholi parents who had migrated from Acholi to Teso in the 1960s, they had a humble upbringing.

His father, the late Saulo Nyekorach, a renowned businessman passed away in September 2025 at the age of 81 and was survived by his second wife, Selina Atolo and seven children, including Dr. Omona.

Kenneth Omona is a husband and father to two children.

Education Background

Dr. Omona’s early education began at Kaberamaido Secondary School, where he completed his O-Level studies before proceeding to Teso College Aloet for his A-Level education.

He then proceeded to pursue medical training at Mbale School of Clinical Officers, achieving a diploma in medicine. He later advanced his education at Makerere University.

Dr. Omona had been in politics ever since childhood, rising from a timekeeper to assistant head prefect in primary school. While in Mbale, he contested for the guild presidency position but lost and also chased the vote for multiparty dispensation in vain.

It is in Mbale town that he built his love for NRM, campaigning for President Museveni and later bringing the campaigns to the Acholi Students Association. This later played a pivotal role in his meeting with President Museveni in 2008.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Dr. Kenneth Omona Olusegun is a long-time member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. He has thus served in several party leadership capacities, including the Deputy Treasurer of NRM.

He had volunteered in the Local Defence Unit (LDU) when the National Resistance Army (NRA) reached his home in Kaberamaido district while pursuing the fleeing Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) in Teso sub-region.

Dr. Omona represented his home district, Kaberamaido County, as a Member of Parliament in Uganda’s 9th Parliament (2011-2016). His tenure in Parliament offered him experience in legislative processes, constituency service, and national policymaking.

In December 2019, during the cabinet reshuffle, Dr. Omona was appointed Principal Private Secretary (PPS) to President Yoweri Museveni.

He had been deployed for ten days as a Regional Supervisor in Acholi sub-region to oversee the mobilization and registration of voters when the appointment happened. 

He officially took over the office on Friday, January 3rd, 2020, from Molly Kamukama, who had been appointed Minister of State for Economic Monitoring.

In this capacity as the PPS, Dr. Omona headed the President’s private office, coordinated staff functions, and helped manage the President’s engagements and institutional priorities.

In March 2024, the President appointed him to serve as the Minister of State for Northern Uganda, a key cabinet position where he is meant to support socio-economic transformation in the Northern Uganda region.
