Charles Kayondo Kamurasi was born in the mid 1940’s at the Royal Palace in Kabarole to the late Omukama George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III and Omugo Leah Ngaju.
His father, the late Omukama George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III, ruled from 1928 to 1965. His mother, Omugo Leah Ngaju, was a Bunyoro princess and the daughter of Omubiito Yoweri Komwiswa, as well as a grandchild of Omukama Kabalega of Bunyoro.
Kamurasi is therefore a direct descendant of Omukama George Rukidi III, the eleventh King of Tooro. He is also a brother to the late Omukama Patrick Mathew Kaboyo Olimi III, the twelfth King of Tooro, making him a paternal uncle to the thirteenth King of Tooro, the late Omukama Oyo Rukidi IV.
His grandfather was Omukama Rukirabasaija Daudi Kasagama Kyebambe III, the tenth King of Tooro.

Omujwera Omubiito (Prince) Keith Kagoro Amooti served as Musuuga during the reign of his brother, Rukidi III. He was later succeeded by Omujwera Omusuuga Omubiito (Chief Prince) Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki, who currently serves as Musuuga and head of the royal clan.
The Omusuuga is the traditional head of the Babiito Royal Clan and is installed alongside the King, serving as an advisor on royal matters. Musuuga Kamurasi is assisted in his traditional duties by Prince Kato Benard Ocaaki Rwakatale Abbooki.

On 15th September, 2026, the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council endorsed Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new Tooro king under the names, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I. Musuuga Charles Kamurasi later announced the elected successor and was met with opposition from members of King Oyo’s immediate family.
Amidst the succession disputes, Kamurasi continued to reaffirm the selection of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next King of Tooro and announced that the formal coronation would be held on 29th September, 2026, following the completion of the required cultural rituals.
Controversies
The traditional authority associated with the office of Chief Prince placed Kamurasi at the centre of a major succession dispute following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV in August 2026.
Following the King’s death, Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire informed the public that the King had left behind a son who would be revealed at the appropriate time to inherit the throne.
Kamurasi strongly disputed this claim, stating that the Babiito Royal Clan had not been informed of any heir. He publicly questioned the Prime Minister’s authority to declare a successor, maintaining that succession is a cultural matter reserved for the Babiito clan.
Kamurasi subsequently formed a 21-member committee to oversee the succession process, stating that the lineage would be traced back to King Oyo’s grandfather if no legitimate biological heir could be established.
Kamurasi’s two sons were also reportedly at odds with their father over the succession issue, supporting King Oyo’s will that they claimed provided a clear path for continuity of the Tooro throne. They accused unnamed individuals of using their father to advance interests that were unrelated to the kingdom’s traditional succession process.
Speaking at St John’s Cathedral during the burial of Omukama Oyo Rukidi IV, Kamurasi stated that the selection of a new King had been conducted in accordance with Ugandan law and the cultural and traditional norms of the kingdom.
