Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma was born in 1970 in Fort Portal City, Uganda, as a member of the Babiito Royal Clan.
Kijanangoma was born to the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and Yusta Asiimwe Kijanangoma Amooti. The two were married on 18 July 1985.
Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma is a grandson of the eleventh King of Tooro, George David Rukidi Kamurasi III, who reigned from 1928 to 1965.
The throne later passed to his paternal uncle, the late Omukama Patrick Mathew Kaboyo Olimi III, who was succeeded by Prince Edward’s cousin the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Prince Edward Kijanangoma was a brother to the late Prince Patrick Happy Kijanangoma and a younger brother to the late Prince David Kijanangoma, who passed away on 15th September 2026, at Mulago Cancer Institute after reportedly battling oesophageal cancer.

Becoming a King (Traditional Roles)
Following the death of Omukama Oyo Rukidi IV, a 21-member Babiito Royal Succession Committee selected Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi as the next Omukama, in accordance with the clan’s succession process.
On 9th September 2026, Musuuga Charles Kamurasi presented the newly announced Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I before Tooro Kingdom’s Supreme Council, the Orukurato, as the Babiito clan’s choice to succeed the late Omukama Oyo.
During King Oyo’s burial on 12th September 2026, at the Karambi Royal Tombs, Kijanangoma reportedly performed the traditional ritual of casting nine coffee beans into the grave, marking an early step in the succession process.
On 15th September 2026, after endorsement by the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council, Musuuga Charles Kamurasi announced that the formal coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new King of Tooro was scheduled for 29th September 2026, at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, following the completion of the required cultural rituals.
In preparation, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has appointed Fr. Nyakaana Paul Busingye Akiiki, as his interim Principal Personal Secretary and spokesperson, responsible for handling all his communications.
