Byakagaba appointed
New Inspector General of Police

Farouk Kirunda, the Deputy Press Secretary to the President, has confirmed that President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police, starting right away. Byakagaba steps in for Martin Okoth Ochola, whose contract wrapped up in March 2024. James Ochaya is now the Deputy Inspector General of Police, taking over from Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi.

The announcement came from State House on Friday evening. Kirunda said, “I confirm that H.E. the President and Commander in Chief of the UPDF has today appointed Mr. Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police replacing IGP Martin Okoth Ochola. Other changes have been effected in the Uganda Police Force.”

Byakagaba brings a lot of experience to the table, having previously served as the Counter Terrorism commander and Human Resource Director. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the country’s security.

This news has caused a stir within the police ranks, with many pleased to see a seasoned officer take the helm.
