Mount Napak is the third-highest mountain in Karamoja, with an elevation of 1,268 meters at its base and 2,530 meters at its summit.

Due to its cliffs and a few scramble sections, it is also regarded as one of the hardest mountains in Karamoja to climb. 

Hikers may need to use a rope of about 15 meters to help them ascend. If done in a day as you originally meant, Mount Napak’s ascent and descent measure roughly 18.9 km, taking about 12 hours total—10 hours of trekking and 2 hours for stops.

As we mentioned earlier, hiking Mount Napak is no easy thing to do. Alongside Mount Kadam, Mount Napak, also in Karamoja is one of the hardest mountains to climb.

However, it’s worth a try! During this trek, tourists may occasionally pause to say hello to the inhabitants who live in the homes at the foot of the mountain. You’ll discover that the steepness of the mountain makes it difficult for people to live there while on a hiking tour in Uganda. 

Consequently, the Karamojong and Iteso populations reside at the base of the mountain. They hunt for little wild animals in the mountains and cultivate their crops in the lush foothills to get their sustenance.

Tourists can also snap a lot of pictures, and continue their trip through the bushy and tall grass-covered trail.

One of Uganda’s largest national protected areas, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve is the second-largest protected area in the country after Murchison Falls National Park. It spans an area of about 2043 sq. Km North of Mount Elgon.

In the Nakapiripirit district of northeastern Uganda, in the Karamoja subregion, is where you’ll find the Pan Upe Reserve. 

Impalas, giraffes, plain zebras, common elands, and other wildlife species are among those found in the reserve. Ostriches are the most distinctive and sought-after bird in the park, with a variety of other bird species also calling Pain Upe Game Reserve home.

Bird Watching at Mount Napak

Mount Napak is one of the best places in Uganda for bird viewing. The untamed-wild environment has drawn unusual bird species and turned the Napak area into a haven for birders. 

In the mountains, there are marked routes that provide opportunities for birdwatching. The rare Ostriches, which can also be found in Kidepo National Park, and the Karamoja Apalis, which is peculiar to the northeastern region of Uganda.

Given the difficulty of accessing trails, viewing games can be difficult; but, with a strong 4X4 vehicle, the trails are doable. 

Mount Napak which is located within the Pian Upe wildlife reserve requires a minimum of 3 days to thoroughly encounter the game in the reserve. This is so that you may have a wonderful experience with the creatures there. 

The reserve is still mostly unexplored and has few visitors, which increases your possibility for wildlife drives in quiet and close quarters while avoiding the throngs that can be found in other national parks. Game drives in the morning and evening are the best times to see most animals.
