Cultural Beliefs, including how the Hot Springs came about

Two hot springs exist, one of which is thought to be female and the other to be male.

Locally known as Wang Amuru for the female hot spring and Wang Alero for the male, both hot springs are situated in the current Nwoya district, which curved out of the Amuru district.

The physical characteristics of the hot springs were used to determine their gender. For instance, Wang Amuru has three stones that resemble traditional cooking stones and are placed tightly together.

The gods at Wang Amuru talk in female voices during rituals to placate the hot springs, whereas the gods at Wang Alero speak in masculine voices. Molded rocks that resemble fountains are surrounded by trees. The fountains emit a mist that gradually dissipates into the atmosphere in a lovely curving pattern.

For a hot spring to form, naturally heated underground water must rise over the rocks and onto the earth’s crust. While some of the springs have water that is warm enough for bathing, others have hot water that can burn people when it comes in contact with their skin.

For these particular springs, however, people believe that they contain a unique kind of treatment. Some residents think it has magical abilities. Visitors usually come from within and far to take a bath in the healing springs.

The springs also have certain rituals. For instance, with a knife, spear, or gun, nobody would attempt to cross the spring. Unless one was quite certain they wouldn’t aim them into the water, one wouldn’t cross with such objects.

This was however abandoned when war broke out in the area. Ever since then, people have crossed without respect for customary beliefs.
