Anne Juuko is a corporate leader and investment banker from Uganda.

Anne is the Managing Director and CEO of Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited.

Early Life and Education

Anne Juuko was born in 1981, in Zirobwe, Luweero District, Central Region of Uganda. 

She got engaged to attorney Apollo Nelson Makubuya, a partner at Kampala, Uganda’s MMAKS Advocates, a firm that practices business law and a former lawyer to the Kingdom of Buganda in January 2022.

They later walked down the aisle on August 26, 2022, at Namirembe Cathedral in Kampala.

Anne and Joel Lutamaguzi, her ex-partner who worked for Stanbic Bank as well had two kids.

Before being accepted to Makerere University, the largest and most prestigious public university in Uganda where she earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree, she attended nearby primary and secondary schools. 

Her second degree, a Master of Strategic Planning, was earned from the Edinburgh, Scotland-based Heriot-Watt University Business School.

Additionally, Ms. Juuko has completed a number of professional leadership and management courses and programs.

Career and Professional Work Experience

In 2001, Anne Juuko began her career in banking. She was vice president and head of fixed income, currencies, and commodities at Citibank Uganda Limited for a good time in the 2000s.

She was then relocated to Citibank Kenya Limited, where she worked for two years, from June 2010 to June 2012, as vice president of customer sales and derivatives marketing.

She joined Standard Bank Group in 2012 and held that position till December 2017 as the head of global markets for Stanbic Bank Uganda. 

She began a new position in January 2018 as Standard Bank Namibia’s Head of Corporate and Investment Banking, which she held until February 2020.

From March 1, 2020, Anne Juuko began serving as managing director and CEO of Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited, the largest commercial bank in the nation by assets, which were valued at US$1.6 billion in June 2019. 

Juuko, the first female from Uganda to hold this post, replaced Patrick Mweheire. At Standard Bank Group, Mweheire was instead appointed Regional Chief Executive, in charge of Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Sudan.

Achievements and Awards

Anne Juuko earned the Primary Dealer of the Year title at Stanbic Bank Uganda for six years while running as the head of global markets.

For the year that ended in April 2023, Anne Juuko, the CEO of Stanbic Bank, was placed 21st among Africa’s Definitive Women CEOs. 

She was also awarded as the ‘Best Woman CEO’ of the year 2021,

In June 2022, Juuko received an award as the first runner-up in the African Business Leadership Awards (ABLA).

Since joining Stanbic, the bank’s deposits have increased by 22%, from UGX4.72 trillion, the amount she inherited to UGX5.74 trillion. 

She oversaw a 30% increase in lending, from UGX2.85 trillion to UGX3.72 trillion. From the UGX5.39 trillion in assets she inherited from Patrick Mweheire to the UGX8.71 billion at the end of 2021, the expansion in lending was a major factor in the 31% increase in assets.

Under her leadership, total income increased by 12%, from UGX 842.6 billion to UGX 946.6 billion. Due to the impact of COVID-19 (the bank took the brunt of the outbreak), profitability decreased marginally in 2020 from UGX258.7 billion but increased 13.9% in 2021 to UGX275.4 billion.

During Anne’s wedding celebrations with Apollo, there were charges on social media from a reportedly dissatisfied woman who claimed Apollo was her man. 

The same lady, known only as Kaitesi, claimed that Anne exploited her position and money to establish her union with Apollo, thus stealing him.
