Early Life and Education

He was born in Zimbabwe where he grew up from. Mudiwa is also a married man and a father.
Charles Mudiwa earned an Honours Degree in Economics from the University of Zimbabwe.
He has a Post Graduate Diploma in Leadership and Change Management from Leeds Beckett University, which he earned between 2012 and 2013.
In 2020, Charles completed an Advanced Management Programme and Digital Transformation and Enterprise Leadership Certificate at Columbia Business School (USA).
In addition, he has a Banking Certificate from the Zimbabwe Institute of Bankers and a Practitioner’ Diploma in Executive Coaching from the Academy of Executive Coaching (UK).
Career and Professional Work Experience

Charles Mudiwa has almost three decades of expertise in the financial and banking sectors in several African regions.
From March 1993 to March 2002, he was the Executive Director of Agribank Zimbabwe in Harare.
From January 2002 to December 2003, he was the Executive Director of Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe in Harare. He was successful in converting the bank from a niche player to a mass retail bank.
From January 2004 to December 2007, he served as a Director at Standard Bank South Africa in Johannesburg. He successfully established Mzansi, South Africa’s first interbank financial inclusion product, which expanded financial inclusion from 46% to 70%.
From December 2007 to August 2013, he was the Chief Executive of Standard Bank Malawi, and during his tenure, he moved the bank from third to first place.
As the Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank Zambia from September 2013 to December 2017, Charles also led the bank from fourth to first place, making it the most profitable bank in the country.
From January 2018 to December 2022, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank Kenya. He raised the bank’s ranking from number nine to number seven. He also spearheaded the bank’s transformation drive, promoting digitization and the development of new capabilities.
He was appointed as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dfcu Bank and began in that capacity on April 11, 2023.
He took over from Mathias Katamba, who left the bank in January 2023 after a two-year tenure for personal reasons. Before Charles Mudiwa was hired, William Ssekabembe was acting as dfcu’s Executive Director.

Reputation Poll International named him one of the Top 50 Reputable Bank CEOs in Africa in 2021.
In 2022, Africa Leadership Magazine also bestowed upon him the Special African Banking Leadership Excellence Award.
The Nation newspaper named Charles Mudiwa one of the top 60 men in Kenya to advocate for gender equality at all levels of the corporate and governmental sectors.
Other Contributions

Charles M. Mudiwa is a Rotarian who has served as Past President of the Rotary Club of Lusaka as well as the Rotary Club of Nairobi Muthaiga North’s Director of Fundraising and Foundation.
He was also a patron of the Rotary Club of Nairobi Samawati, which was a corporate chapter of Stanbic Bank Kenya.
He is also a member of the South African Institute of Bankers and a trustee of Nairobi’s Ridgeways Baptist Church.
Mudiwa is a strong advocate for gender equality and diversity. He is deeply committed to ensuring that all employees have equal access to opportunities.
Notable in this regard were the launches of Standard Bank’s women’s banking proposals, Anakazi in Zambia and DADA (Dare to Aspire, Dare to Achieve) in Kenya.
Mudiwa is a former Chairman of the Bankers Association of Zambia and the founder of Liberty Insurance Company (Zambia Ltd).
