David Asman was born on February 15, 1954, in Hollis, Queens, NY to Robert Asman and Nancy Johnson Asman.
He is Scottish in origin and was raised in Washington, D.C.
In the 1970s, David Asman taught math in junior high school in Chicago. However, short-order cooking was his first job.
He attended Marlboro College for his high school. After that, he earned a journalism bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University.
Asman got married to Marta Cecilia, a Latina who was born in Nicaragua on February 15, 1989. Felipe, Asman’s stepson, fought in the Iraq War. Their daughter Kristiana was born on July 18, 1992.
Career and Professional Work Experience
David Asman joined Prospect in 1978 as an assistant editor. He was promoted to executive editor of the magazine the following year.
George Gilder then recruited him in 1980 to launch an economics journal at the Manhattan Institute. Editing the “Americas” and “Manager’s Journal” columns, he started working for the newspaper as an editorial writer in 1983.
After twelve years of covering Latin America, he moved on to editorial features editor of the Wall Street Journal in 1995.
Asman took on administrative duties in addition to his editorial page duties when he was promoted to senior editor of the Journal.
In 1997, a year after Fox News debuted, he departed The Wall Street Journal to work there.

The Wall Street Journal on Management: Adding Value through Synergy was edited by Asman, who was also honoured with the 1986 Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) Tom Wallace Award for his coverage of Latin America.
For his articles on free trade and the economies of Cuba and Mexico, he also won the IAPA’s Daily Gleaner Award in 1992 and 1995 respectively.
