He started his career at Uganda Electricity Board (UEB). After UEB was unbundled in 2000, he joined Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL).
He briefly moved to Umeme Ltd at the start of their concession in March 2005, rising to the rank of Regional Technical Services Officer.
He, however, rejoined UEDCL in 2006 and has been with the company since.
He currently serves as the Chief Engineering & Technical Services Officer (CETSO) at UEDCL, a role central to managing the company’s technical operations and monitoring the performance of leased assets.
Protaze succeeded Mr. Oidu Franklin Kizito, who had been his mentor all the way from UEB upon his retirement in 2020.

He played a leading role in outlining the technical strategy. He publicly acknowledged the challenges of the handover, noting the need to restore transformers, fix overloaded equipment, and upgrade critical infrastructure.
He has been involved in projects to revamp and expand the network in various regions, including Moyo, Adjumani, and Elegu.
Eng. Tibyakinura has also used his position to caution technical teams on corruption and maintain a high standard of professional integrity within the organization.
