Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has lashed out at the EC for imposing guidelines they cannot implement fairly.

The incumbent Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago has lashed out at the Electoral Commission (EC) for imposing guidelines they cannot implement fairly.

Lukwago made the remarks while appearing on NBS TV’s political show on Wednesday morning. He said that the true principle of democracy commands that elections should be conducted in an atmosphere where people can freely share ideas.

According to Lukwago, this is non-evident because the ruling party has deployed all means to control and block the opposition from exercising their rights.

“I am waiting for the EC. I would like to know how we are going to conduct campaigns,” Lukwago said.

“The principle of democracy commands that elections should be conducted in an atmosphere where people can freely share ideas. How can this be free and fair with barricades everywhere?”

The Lord Mayor also, said that the police are supposed to guard the elections but violent scenes are already being witnessed during the campaigns of the police firing tear gas at opposition supporters.

“The police is supposed to police the elections. They have since deviated from their mandate. The guidelines of the elections by the EC are a real mockery of democracy,” Erias Lukwago added.

Justice Byabakama can use this against me to overturn my results, but I don’t care. He has turned out to be worse than his predecessor.”

Lukwago further explained that the EC has been channelled to help Museveni build his empire and a long stay in power rather than concentrating on the priorities of this country.

“It is terrible the way they are squandering the resources of this country. They say they have lost 65 days of campaigns. I call it 65 days of mayhem. The pre-occupation of Mr. Museveni is crushing the opposition.”

Meanwhile, he lashed out at his colleague Margaret Nantongo Zziwa the former Speaker of the 3rd East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) who was also part of the political show.

Nantongo Zziwa is part of the group of people aspiring for the Nakawa West legislative position in the coming 2021 elections. However, Lukwago said that she should be thinking about her retirement following many years serving as a leader.

“It is daydreaming to think the system will take over Kampala. They lost grip of Kampala long ago. I sympathize with my sister here Margaret Nantongo Zziwa after her curve rising that high.”

“I thought after reaching the apex of one’s political curve, you would gracefully retire. I thought my dear sister shouldn’t come back. “

In response, Zziwa explained that she has not yet reached the highest peak in politics. She noted that parliament is the medium platform any leader would wish to get to best serve his or her people.

“Lukwago should know that the medium through higher politics is through Parliament. If I have reached the apex, I am not the highest in the hierarchy of politics,” Zziwa said.

“There are several aspirants in Nakawa West, but Margaret Zziwa is the best. I am a Ugandan. I went to EALA and retired there. I am back to serve the people of Nakawa West. Nakawa is a city, but the prerequisite services needed for it to be a city are not yet there, so here I am.”
