Martin Okoth Ochola has urged Muslims during Ramadan not to overlook the Standard Operating Procedures aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.

The Inspector-General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola has urged Muslims that as they embark on their fasting and prayer period (Ramadan) they should not neglect the Standard Operating Procedures aimed at curbing the spread of the COVID-19.

In a statement dated 12th April 2021, Ochola indicated that the month of Ramadan has yet again come at a time when the coronavirus is still in our midst.

He said although the caseload in Uganda has reduced, COVID-19 cases have started creeping back slowly, including the second wave of cases which is believed to be even more dangerous and life-threatening.

As a result, he begged all Muslim communities that as they converge to send their prayers to God, they should maintain the self-discipline to deter from the further spread of the virus.

“Therefore, as we observe the community spirit that the Ramadan provides, we should follow the Ministry of Health SOPs by having self-discipline, sacrifice and empathy, for our loved ones and the vulnerable, to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and save lives of fellow Ugandans during the Islamic Holy Month,” Ochola said.

“I also like to applaud the leadership of the Muslim Community in Uganda, for their positive response towards the fight against COVID-19. Once again we urge them to embrace the Holy Month of Ramadan and adopt health and safety measures that can help protect all Muslims, their extended families and friends during this challenging period of COVID-19,” Ochola added.

He, however, wished the Muslim fraternity a peaceful and blessed Holy Month of Ramadan

The IGP said the month is a very important one for all Muslims because it serves them an opportunity to traditionally come together to fast, pray and honour the values at the heart of Islam, of peace, gratitude, generosity and compassion.

“During this time of fasting, the Joint Task Force continues to advocate for peace, safety and rule of law. We have further encouraged all our Territorial Commanders to work with all Muslim leaders in their respective jurisdictions to address and respond to all concerns of crime and safety, threats and vulnerabilities against Muslims including patrolling all mosques and worship areas during the Holy Month of Ramadan,” the IGP revealed.

“We also call upon all Muslims, to contact the nearest police station, or Joint Task Force, on toll free line 0800300100, or on our telephone contacts 0713-250391, 0714-012734 and or through our Whatsapp number at the National Command Centre on 0779-999999. Once again let us all welcome the month of Ramadan and translate the common values and principles of peace, love and compassion to each other.”
