John Chrysostom Muyingo also known as “Musajja wa Kabaka” is a Ugandan politician, consultant and educator by profession. 

Dr John Muyingo is the current State Minister for Higher Education in Uganda.

He has previously held the positions of State Minister for Primary Education and Member of Parliament for Bamunanika County, Luweero District.

Early Life 

Muyingo

John Chrysostom Muyingo was born in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, on February 22, 1960.

He was born to his parents John Chrysostom Ssekidde of Kakoola Village, Bamunanika County, Luwero District and the late Victoria Nakiwala of Naakulabye, Lubaga Division.

His father was a teacher and wished for Muyingo to become a teacher as well although Muyingo wanted to become a priest.

In his early school days, his real name, Miyingo, was mistakenly listed as Muyingo which he continued to use.

He is a catholic by religion and was raised in a religious family. He is also a Muganda by tribe and a member of the monkey clan (Nkima).

He is the last born in their family and grew up as a stubborn child. His grandmother was forced to take him away but a year later, Muyingo’s father brought him back so he could discipline him whenever he did anything wrong.

Education Background

John Chrysostom Muyingo went to Malungu Primary School and later to Mulajje Primary School, a Catholic-founded school where he completed his primary education.

He went to Kisubi Seminary but later joined St Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK).

For his A-level studies, he went to Makerere College School. 

He then enrolled at Makerere University in 1983 and received his Bachelor of Science in Education in 1986 specializing in Mathematics and Chemistry subjects. 

Following his Bachelors, he obtained a Master’s degree in Educational Management from Makerere University in 1996.

He also got a doctorate in philosophy from the same institution in 2004. His doctorate research addressed the funding of higher education in Uganda.

Marriage / Relationship

John Chrysostom Muyingo met Rosemary Namayanja in Uganda Martyrs’ Secondary School Namugongo and married in 1992. 

They have six children together.

Career and Professional Work Experience

John Muyingo began his career as a teacher at Ndejje Secondary School, teaching mathematics and chemistry. 

Later, he worked as the director of studies at St. Joseph’s School Nsambya where he continued to teach. After that, he was moved to St. Joseph Secondary School Naggalama in the Mukono District’s Naggalama.

He assumed the position of headmaster at Naggalama when the institution only offered O-Levels (S1 – S4). 

Despite the school board’s initial opposition, he began a boarding programme for boys and later launched the school’s A-Level (S5 – S6) division.

He was shifted from Naggalama to Uganda Martyrs’ Secondary School Namugongo in 1992. He served as the headmaster of Uganda Martyrs’ Secondary School from 1992 to 2010.

Political Career

In 2011, Muyingo made his political entrance by running as an Independent for the parliamentary seat of Bamunanika County in the Luweero District. With 92 per cent of the votes, he was elected to that position. 

On May 27, 2011, Muyingo was named State Minister for Higher Education until March 2015, succeeding Mwesigwa Rukutana. 

He again contested for the same position in the 2016 General elections and won serving as the Member of Parliament for Bamunanika County for the second term.

On June 6, 2016, he was reappointed to the role of State Minister for Higher Education after serving briefly as State Minister for Primary Education from March 2015 to June 2016.

However, in the general elections of 2021, he was defeated by Robert Ssekitoleko, his former campaign manager and personal assistant, who ran as a candidate for the National Unity Platform party.

Other Career accomplishments

The Muyingo family owns four Seeta High Schools, located in Seeta, Mukono District. They are found in the Goma subcounty, Mbalala and Ttakajunge.

They also have two Kindergarten wings and three primary sections under the name Seeta Junior School.

In the Bamunanika subcounty, he is the director of Kakoola Village’s Kakoola High School and Kakoola Primary School. 

These schools were established primarily to assist the less fortunate and orphans in the community in achieving success and becoming significant figures in the future.

Muyingo is frequently consulted in the field of education having served on the boards of governors of numerous schools.

He has served as the vice chairman of Kyambogo University’s Council. He also served as the chair of the council’s appointments board and budget committee.

In addition to being the Chairman of the Finance Committee, he was also a member of Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi’s Council.

He was named Vice Chairperson of the Kampala Archdiocese’s Education Teaching Commission by Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga. 

Achievements and Awards

John Chrysostom Muyingo’s first task upon arriving at Uganda Martyr’s secondary school, Namugongo as a headmaster was to renovate and improve the school in all areas. The current success of Uganda Martyrs is thus attributed to his leadership.

Muyingo formerly held the position of Minister of Education in the government of Buganda, where he twice received the award for best performing Minister.
