Joshua Baraka is a Ugandan singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and record artist.

He is a multi-talented RnB and Afro-pop artist on the rise. In his own words, his storytelling spans themes ranging from romance to self-acceptance but can ultimately be characterised as feel-good music or live music.

He rose to recognition following the release of his debut EP ‘Baby Steps,’ a four-track album that introduces the audience to him released in August 2021.

Joshua rose to popularity after releasing his hit track ‘Nana’ in January 2023.

Early Life and Education

Joshua Baraka was born in Kazo, Kawempe Division, Kampala, Uganda in the year 2000.

He grew up in Uganda with his parents and siblings. Joshua is the family’s firstborn, followed by a younger brother and sister.

Joshua Baraka, however, is also a Kenyan descended from his father’s Kenyan tribe.

He attended several primary schools in Uganda before completing Kitante Primary School.

He also attended Makerere College, where he completed his ordinary-level schooling and obtained his Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE).

Joshua Baraka received his Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) from Mengo Secondary School.

His musical journey was strongly impacted by his parents. His mother was and still is a church worship leader, and his father was an avid reader. 

Joshua Baraka grew up listening to a wide variety of music, reading, and writing a lot of literature. When he was ten years old, he wrote his first song.

His diverse musical experience exposed him to various rhythmic and melodic styles and variations.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Joshua Baraka’s musical journey began with his mother at church; he was influenced early on by gospel music and Ugandan performers such as Radio & Weasel. Songs by Bob Marley, Chronixx, Maurice Kirya, Cory Henry, and other artists had an impact on him.

Joshua Baraka began singing in church at an early age and later learned to play musical instruments such as the drums and guitar in school. He began playing the piano in 2016 and began producing in 2018.

In 2020, he began recording his first tracks, and he released the self-titled EP Baby Steps, which introduced him to the music world.

Joshua Baraka presently has over ten albums to his credit, including the Baby Steps EP, which he released in 2021. He also released the singles Belinda and Sana in 2022, both of which featured Merry Lynn.

Achievements and Awards

Joshua Baraka’s distinct musical approach has distinguished him among Uganda’s new generation of performers.

His modern dancehall 2023 hit “Nana” captivated music lovers across the continent, becoming the number one song on the Apple Music Top 100 Uganda chart and the Audiomack Uganda chart, as well as the most Shazamed single in Uganda.

Joshua Baraka has a net worth of 18 million Ugandan shillings, including his music catalogue, with annual revenue of 12 million Ugandan shillings in 2022. 

In 2023, his annual revenues from appearances and concerts are estimated to top 15 million Ugandan shillings.
