Speaker Kadaga issues new guidelines to Parliamentarians for stopping COVID-19 outbreak

Hon Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of Uganda has issued guidelines to be followed by Parliamentary staff to prevent the deadly coronavirus disease COVID-19.

“We will also have the closure of certain facilities, for instance, the gym; it will not be available for the next 32 Parliamentary Committee days,” Kadaga said.

The Speaker in her remarks directed all accounting officers in the various ministries to limit the number of staffs who are supposed to appear before the Parliamentary Committee, whenever summoned to only four.

Staffs of Parliamentary Forums, Interns of Parliament and Personal Assistants of MPs have all been banned from coming to Parliament for the next 32 days.

“In regards to the work of the Committees, we are proposing that the ministries when they come, should come with only four people, the Minister, the PS and the two other few officials in the ministry so that they don’t come with 100 people as they normally do,” Kadag said.

“We are also suspending the interns; we also suspend staffs of Parliamentary Forum effective tomorrow.”

Kadaga also banned legislators from attending constituency activities for the next 32 days, plus restricting the Parliament canteen to only legislators and some few staff of Parliament and shifting the Parliamentary sittings from the current Chambers to the Conference Hall.

“The canteen is strictly for members of staff, non-members will not be allowed there, and I also advise that Hon members do not conduct fundraising in your constituencies, do not organize football matches, don’t organize anything as you have been told by the President,” Kadaga said.

Kadaga then named members of Parliament on the National Task Force intended to fight the deadly COVID-19 disease, the team includes, Hon Arinaitwe Rwakajara, Hon Francis Mweijukye, Hon. Atiku Bernard, Hon. Esther Anyakun, Sergeant at Arms and the Parliament Doctor.

Kadaga says part of their work will be to provide daily deadly coronavirus disease COVID-19 updates.

Additionally, Kadaga said a number of visitors to Parliament will be limited for the next 32 days. These include; school visits and other people who do not important business at Parliament.
