Uganda Police marine officer Sgt Godfrey Mwondha dies on a rescue mission following floods that hit Kampala city on Saturday

Uganda Police marine officer drowned while on a rescue mission following the Saturday heavy floods that hit Kampala City.

Sgt Godfrey Mwondha a marine officer attached to Uganda Police was washed away by floods that happened on Saturday, 14/December/ 2019 while trying to save a man only identified as Ssekitoleko, a resident of Biwologoma, Kira Division who was downing in the fast-running waters.

Mwondha’s body according to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, Mwondha was found in Mbuya Katoogo swamp which is a washing bay ground for motorists’ unconscious.

But shortly Mwondha was declared dead at Kiswa Health Centre in Bugolobi where he was rushed for medical attention.

Police says they recorded three deaths on Saturday that includes the Police marine officer, Jowelia Tumusiime aged 50, an employee of Nippon cleaning services who died as a result of Saturday floods in Zana Lufuka, and another woman together with her 24-year-old daughter were electrocuted to death while hanging clothes in Ssembule zone, Lubaga division as a result of the heavy rains in the country.

“Three people died after being washed away by fast running water. Among them is Police marine officer, No. 4767 SGT Godfrey Mwondha attached to Police Marine who was on duty to rescue a one Ssekitoleko of Biwologoma in Kiira Division who was washed away by floods,” Owoyesigyire said.

“Our officer was found in Mbuya Katoogo swamp used as a washing bay alive and taken to Kiswa health centre in Bugloobi where he died from.”

“It is alleged that while Agnes Naiga, 44 was hanging clothes during the early morning downpour, her hanging lines were in touch with lives wires transmitting electricity and she was electrocuted. Meanwhile, her daughter Lillian Nakagogwe, 24 tried to save her and she too was electrocuted,” Owoyesigyire added.

The bodies of Naiga and her daughter were picked and taken to the City Mortuary for post-mortem as the investigation into the cause of their death proceeds.
