Maggie Magode Ikuya, also known as James Magode Ikuya, is a politician and activist from Uganda. Magode Ikuya is the current State Minister for East African Affairs as of 2021.
Early Life and Education
Magode Ikuya was born on the 13th of July 1947. He is from Molo- Magodes Town Council in Tororo North County, Tororo District.
He did, however, spend his entire adult life in Mbale District, Bagusi village.
Magode Ikuya is married to two wives who come from the Sironko-Bududa district and Budadiri district in the Eastern region of Uganda. He has lost four of his children; two girls and two boys and currently has eight children.
Magode Ikuya having been actively involved in the liberation struggles, has been a close friend to President Museveni since the 1960s. They happened to be together in Malukhu in 1963.
Career and Professional Work Experience
Maggie Magode Ikuya has worked with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), FRONASA, and the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).
In 2021, Magode was appointed as the State Minister for East African Affairs replacing Julius Maganda. He was to work alongside Rebecca Kadaga, the Minister for East African Affairs and the first Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda.
Magode held the positions of District Commissioner in Mbale and Director for Mass mobilisation in the movement secretariat before his resignation from public service and before the return of multiparty politics in 2005.
Magode has also been a weekly contributor to the Government owned New Vision publishing articles about NRM politics.
Achievements and Awards
Maggie Magode Ikuya is a member of the National Historical Forum. When he was appointed as the State Minister for East African Affairs in 2021, he said that his selection was proof that the administration had finally listened to the voices of those who had participated in the liberation war.
As an activist, Magode has widely published works about politics and greatly contributed to reminding Ugandans about their political history and ideologies.
Controversies
On 16th June 2021, the Parliament approved the appointment of the then seventy-four-year-old Maggie Magode Ikuya as Minister of State for East African affairs leading to the rise of so many open harsh talks among Ugandans due to his age in regards to service in the Government of Uganda.
Magode Ikuya who could hardly walk on his own when he arrived to be vetted and had to be supported by close friends and relatives laughed arrogantly at claims that he was too spry and elderly to manage the docket claiming that it was normal for a person of his age to fall sick.
Ikuya’s appointment had caused celebrations in both Tororo and Mbale, however, his comment following the appointment caused chaos.
Ikuya declared and openly swore devotion to Tororo rubbing his “hosts” and in-laws in Bugisu the wrong way. The Bagisu claimed to know if he was already circumcised and pledged to have him circumcised at the age of seventy-five if necessary to claim him as one of their own.
