A court in Kampala released the 11 suspects who had been accused of killing Sheikh Maj Mohammed Kiggundu and his bodyguard in 2016.

The International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala Friday released the 11 suspects who had been accused of killing Sheikh Maj Mohammed Kiggundu and his bodyguard in 2016.

Maj. Kiggundu who was one of the former commanders of the rebel Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) was on November 16, 2016, shot dead at Masanafu, a Kampala suburb by assailants moving on a Boda Boda.

He was shot together with his bodyguard, Sgt. Steven Mukasa.

According to a Daily Monitor article published that year, the two were driving to the city in a UPDF pick-up truck at about 7:30 am.

Following the gruesome incident, several suspects were remanded and charged for involving themselves in the murder of the General.

However, on Friday, the International Crimes Division of the High Court released the 11 suspects in relation to the matter citing that they had lost interest in hearing their case.

According to Stella Beatrice Atingu the High Court’s deputy registrar, all court proceedings concerning the matter have been discontinued. She noted that the suspects can only be charged again for different matters.

“Since the DPP filed a Nolle Prosequi discontinuing proceedings against all the accused persons, they are now free unless they are held on other charges. You are now free persons,” Atingu noted.

“The 11 released people include Abdulaziz Abdushakur Musoke, Sulaiman Wayaba, Bashir Nyangisho, Sulait Lukwago Majid, Alqaeda Abasi Fikil Yusuf, Abubaker Katende, Lukia Namulondo, Malik Ssenabulya, Yasin Kaggwa Galiwango, Usama Mugozi and Asuman Musijjo.”

Meanwhile, this comes at a time when murder related incidents continue to rise in the country, the recent gruesome scene that saw a one Zebra Ssenyange, a former boxing champion in the country who was shot at by security operatives in Bwaise, a suburb area in Kampala during the wee hours of Wednesday, 30th December 2020 is a clear example.

Others include; the late Yasin Kawuma, Bobi Wine’s bodyguard who was in 2018 also shot dead from inside the politician’s Tundra vehicle near Hotel Pacific in Arua during the district by- elections.

The late Ibrahim Abiriga, the former Arua district legislator is another. He was also murdered in cold blood near his home in Kawamara.

Despite all these happenings in addition to very many others, the government is yet to produce any credible evidence behind their deaths.

Concerning Zebra’s case, for example, President Museveni during his new year speech disclosed that the boxer was killed by security operatives but months have now passed and the security suspects have never been brought to light.
