Mathew Nabwiso is an actor, singer, film director, producer, and business entrepreneur from Uganda.

Sanyu (2021), When You Become Me (2023), 24 Hours (2022), and Prickly Roses (2020) are among the films directed by Nabwiso. He is well-recognised for his parts in the films Imbabazi, Rain, and Kyaddala. 

Early Life and Education

Mathew Nabwiso was born on February 4th, as the seventh child of eleven children. 

His parents are Jinja’s Mama Christine Nabwiso and the former MP Frank Nabwiso. 

For his primary education, Nabwiso attended Mwiri and Kamuli Boys primary schools. 

He then attended Busoga College in Mwiri for his O-level and Namasagali College in Kamuli for his A-level.

He later graduated from the Cyprus Institute of Marketing with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.

Mathew Nabwiso is married to Eleanor Nabwiso, another actor. They met on the set of The Hostel, a popular drama series in which they both acted, in 2010.

Mathew married Eleanor in a private wedding ceremony in Kampala on October 20, 2013. They are parents of four children.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Mathew Nabwiso explored music in the late 1990s but dropped out due to the difficulty of the industry at the time. He was the lead singer for a World Music band called Soul Beat Africa. He was also a Tusker Project Fame auditions judge and an advertising model. 

Prior to shifting from music to acting, he worked full-time as the sales manager of an ICT company. However, he left his employment to pursue a career in acting.

He made his film debut in 2006 with the film Battle of the Souls. 

He was led through basic actors training by Matt Bish, the film Director at Bish Films, after auditioning for his first acting position for the feature film “Battle of the Souls” in 2006.

In 2011, he joined the cast of the popular television series The Hostel, which aired on NTV Uganda.

Mathew and his wife Eleanor Nabwiso co-founded the production company Nabwiso Films in 2015 after the series ended. The firm has produced a number of successful films, notably “Bed of Thorns” and “Rain,” both of which were praised by critics for their quality and authenticity.

“Karamoja,” one of his films, benefited from a subsidy awarded by Uganda Communications (UCC).

Achievements and Awards

Mathew Nabwiso is a film actor and producer who has won numerous awards.

He earned the Best Actor award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) in 2013 for the film A Good Catholic Girl. 

Later that year, he received an AMVCA nomination for the character of ‘Dumba’ in the film Rain. He earned the Film Act Award at the Vine Awards in 2020 for his contribution to Ugandan cinema.

Nabwiso has received multiple Uganda Film Festival (UFF) honours, including “Best TV Series” and “Best Screenplay” for films such as “Rain.”

His films, including ‘Sanyu Series,’ ‘Bed of Thorns,’ and ‘Rain,’ have aired on DSTV, Showmax, and Iflix, three of Africa’s most prominent digital platforms.
