Early Life and Education
Michael Chibita (Mike) was born on April 30, 1963, to Clement and Edisa Duallo in Buwesa Village, Butaleja District, in the Eastern Region of Uganda.
He is married to Professor Monica Chibita, the dean of the faculty of journalism, media, and communication at Uganda Christian University. They have two daughters and three sons altogether, making five children.
After attending Buwesa primary school, he was accepted at King’s College Budo in Wakiso District, where he finished his O-Level studies before pursuing his A-Level goals. He graduated from high school in 1985 after completing his A-Level studies.
He enrolled in Makerere University’s Law School and earned a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1988.
After that, in 1989, he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Center.
Later, he graduated from the University of Iowa in the United States with a Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law.
Career and Professional Work Experience

In 1993, Chibita gave lectures on African history and international relations at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul in Roseville, Minnesota, a neighbourhood of St. Paul.
He went back to Uganda in 1994, where he was appointed a State Attorney in the Attorney General’s Chambers.
From 1995 to 1996, he served as the personal assistant to attorney generals Abu Mayanja and Kalias Ekemu. He was second from the office of the Attorney General and worked for the Constituent Assembly Commission.
In 1996, he was given the position of Private Secretary for Legal Affairs in the Office of the President of Uganda, where he worked for seven years until 2003.
After that, he took early retirement from the government and joined the Uganda Revenue Authority as the executive assistant to the then-commissioner general, Allen Kagina, and assistant commissioner.
He held this position until 2010, at which point he was appointed a High Court Judge, posted to Masaka, and later relocated to Fort Portal, where he worked until 2013. Until later that year, when he was appointed director of public prosecutions, he was deputy head of the division of the Land Division.
He was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda in early 2020, where he is currently employed. He is the President of the Bible Society of Uganda and a Council Member of the Scripture Union of Uganda in addition to his legal practice.
He was the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) from 2013 to 2019. He was chosen to serve on Uganda’s Supreme Court in December 2019.
Achievements and Awards
Justice Michael Chibita was one of the recipients of the awards at The Hope International Conference and Gala that was held to raise awareness about the need to put an end to child sacrifice and human trafficking in Uganda and around the world.
Mike Chibita is the author of ‘loved by the best’ where he shares his life’s journey. Alternatively, the tales have shaped the way he lives now.
Controversies
Michael Chibita, the director of public prosecutions, brought new charges against three high-ranking members of the ministry of public service in 2015 in an effort to recover sh88 billion in pension money.
