Activities at Pakuba Safari lodge

The Lodge’s location gives guests access to a variety of Uganda safari activities.

Game drive safari

Between the Victoria Nile and the White Nile, the savannah contains the greatest concentration of wildlife, which makes for great game drive safaris.

Guests can reach this area through the Paraa Vehicle Ferry, a motorized pontoon that allows crossings approximately every two hours in both directions.

The most fascinating regions are the savanna grasslands of the Buligi region, situated near the Victoria Nile delta on Lake Albert.

On the southern bank of the Victoria Nile, where the landscapes are more thickly forested, spotting wildlife is more difficult, although the trails leading to the Top of the Falls may be worth exploring.

Hiking

The most popular hiking option is the 45- to 60-minute trek to the top of the waterfalls, where you can observe the powerful waterfall from a variety of angles and heights.

The trail can also be reached by a game drive safari or a motorboat safari up to the Paraa stretch.

Boat cruise to the bottom of the falls

When in Murchison Falls National Park, don’t miss out on the three-hour motorboat safari to the base of the falls. Hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffe, elephants, and lions are all common sights along the banks of the Nile.

Chimpanzee tracking

There is a wonderful natural forest not far away called Kaniyo Pabidi Forest, which spans 268 square kilometres and is home to massive mahogany and ironwood trees.

Over 800 chimpanzees call this forest home, with about 90 of them habituated for tourism and easily accessible for chimpanzee trekking. Other types of monkeys and apes that you might see in the forest are black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and olive baboons.

Notable birds found in this forest include the endemic Puvel’s illaposis, the white-thighed hornbill, and the chocolate-backed kingfisher.

Rabongo Forest, located to the southeast of the conservation area, is another great spot to see monkeys and a variety of bird species when staying at Pakuba Safari Lodge.

There are fewer tourists in this area, so you’re more likely to see a wide variety of animals, but without habituated chimps.

Bird-watching

With almost 450 species, Murchison Falls National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers.

Some of the most interesting birds you might see include martial eagles, woodland kingfishers, African fish eagles, ground hornbills, weavers, secretary birds, black-bellied bustards, open-billed storks, red-throated bee-eaters, francolins, grey herons, greater flamingos, papyrus gonolek, lesser flamingos and shoebill storks.

Hot air balloon experience

Dream Balloons operates the hot air balloon experience from a launch site on the north bank of the river, approximately 18 kilometres from Pakuba Safari lodge.

The balloon flies either East or West towards Murchison Falls or west towards Lake Albert, depending on the prevailing wind conditions.

The balloon employs an eight-person basket with a pilot. Flights range between 45 and 60 minutes and include a bush breakfast at the landing site.

How to get to Pakuba Safari lodge

From Kampala, the Lodge is 305 kilometres away via Karuma, and it takes only 15 minutes to reach the Lodge from Tangi gate, which is on the northern side of Murchison Falls National Park.

Visitors who are looking for a bit more of an adventure on their Uganda safari can enter the lodge from the south by crossing the Victoria Nile at Paraa.

You can also easily connect to Entebbe International Airport and other inland airfields via fly-in safari from the close-by Pakuba Airfield, located approximately 13 km (25 minutes drive) away from Pakuba Safari lodge.
