Peter Hillary Kaujju is a seasoned Ugandan communications and media professional with more than 16 years of expertise in public relations, media management, and strategic leadership across both government and private institutions. 

His specialization is in crafting and executing communication strategies that position organizations as people-centered brands. 

Peter Kaujju is currently the Head of Communications and Marketing at Umeme Limited, Uganda’s former national electricity distribution company.

Early Life & Family Background

Born in Budaka District, Peter Kaujju grew up in a modest household as the second-last child among eight siblings—five sisters and three brothers. 

His late father, Alupa Mugalanzi, served as a public officer, while his late mother, Victoria Nawula, worked as a nurse. 

Raised in a home with many sisters, he picked up valuable life skills, including cooking.

As a child, he was outgoing and adventurous, though often landing in mischief with his siblings. His mother, a former Catholic nun, was a strict disciplinarian who went on to instill strong values in her children.

Education Background

Peter began his education at Jami Primary School before moving on to Bukedi College Kachonga for O-level studies and later to Kajjansi Progressive Secondary School for A-level studies. 

During his school years, he actively engaged in sports, excelling in football, volleyball, table tennis, and scrabble.

He later enrolled at Makerere University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication. 

Peter Hillary Kaujju went on to complete a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI) Business School in 2015.

Other academic accomplishments

Beyond formal academics, Kaujju has continued professional development through a range of specialized courses. 

He is a member of the Public Relations Association of Uganda and an alumnus of École Nationale d’Administration (ENA) College in Paris, France, where he studied Communication and Diplomacy. 

He also holds a Public Relations Strategies Certificate from the British Council and has obtained multiple certifications in media management from the Reuters Foundation.

Marriage / Relationships

Peter Kaujju is in a committed relationship and is a father to one daughter. 

He first met his partner at St. Francis Chapel, Makerere University, during his time in the church drama group, and the two have remained close ever since.

In July 2020, Peter Kaujju officially took on the role of Head of Communications and Marketing which also doubles as the Spokesperson at Umeme, Uganda’s former electricity distribution company. 

His appointment came shortly after his resignation from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), where he had served for nine years.

He had tendered his resignation at KCCA on 30 May 2020 and noted that he would cease being an employee there by July 1, 2020.

Peter joined KCCA in April 2011 as a Communications Supervisor in the Public and Corporate Affairs Office, eventually rising to become Head of Public & Corporate Affairs and Spokesperson. 

His responsibilities included building the institution’s brand, steering communication strategies, and developing partnerships with development agencies, the diplomatic community, and key stakeholders. 

He also managed a team of over 40 professionals and advised senior leadership on both internal and external communication matters.

Before his KCCA tenure, he was a Communications Officer at Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) from March 2008 to April 2011, attached to the Commissioner General’s Office. 

He had also served as a Public Relations Manager at ZK Advertising, and prior to that, worked as a Business and Financial Journalist at New Vision Newspaper (2005–2008), where he specialized in economics and investigative reporting.

Other Career Accomplishments

While at KCCA, Peter was actively involved in both national and international engagements. 

Notably, he contributed as part of the technical support staff to the Mayors’ Migration Council, a global initiative backed by the Open Society Foundations in New York, which empowers city leaders to address migration and urban challenges.

Achievements and Awards

Peter Kaujju played a leading role in transforming the Kampala City Council (KCC) brand into KCCA, setting a new benchmark for institutional communication in Uganda.

He was also part of the pioneer team of Uganda Revenue Authority’s Communication department.

Peter has been recognized for building strong media relations, elevating organizational image, and establishing people-centered communication strategies both locally and internationally.
