Uganda Police Force issues statement on photos of alleged tortured NUP supporter Ronald Segawa, saying they’re fake.

Police have come up to clarify on photos of the National Unity Platform supporter known as Ronald Segawa who was abducted by security operatives, tortured then dropped at Mulago hospital thinking that he was dead.

Segawa was later admitted at Mulago hospital where he is but still in a coma and immediately after gaining access to him supporters and bloggers of the National unity Platform started sharing his photos of how he had been tortured by security operatives. 

In the shared photos there was one that showed that Segawa had been beaten and suffered an open fracture on his hand. It’s upon this ground that the police have come out to clarify on the issue through its official social media platform.

The police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says the photos being shared are fake and there aimed at spreading negative propaganda towards the image of the police and are sponsored by opposition groups.

“we wish to inform the public that the gruesome photo of a tortured male, identified as Ronald Segawa, that showed him with random body injuries including an open fractured wound on the hand, that have since gone viral, with the claim that the victim was tortured by security agencies, is fake news and a negative propaganda tactic, by opposition groups and its sponsored network of bloggers,” Enanga said.

The police furthermore say that the fracture attributed to the hand of Segawa is for a victim identified as Nelima Sandra of Mooni ward, Industrial Division, Mbale city, who fell off on a rock on the 27/01/2021 and sustained fractures on both arms.

“our task teams investigating the alleged torture have meticulously verified that the image of a fractured hand attributed to Ronald Segawa, were of an accident victim identified as Nelima Sandra of Mooni ward, Industrial Division, Mbale City, who feel on the rock 27/01/2021, and sustained fractures on both arms and leg,” the police added.

According to the police the images were smuggled from Mbale Regional Hospital where the victim was undergoing treatment and they were photoshopped to incite negative perceptions against security agencies. 

“It’s unfortunate that some media houses fell victim of calculated and malicious propaganda by NUP including its Party President who affirmed that the fracture belonging to their supported Ronald Segawa,” the police added.
