The Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Simon Byabakama assures fair elections despite Kyagulanyi or Bobi Wine’s call for him to resign.

The National Unity Platform party presidential flag bearer, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine Tuesday urged the Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Simon Byabakama to resign if he cannot take charge of the elections.

Bobi Wine made the remarks while addressing journalists following his meeting with EC officials on Tuesday morning. He said that the Electoral Commission has failed to show evidence that they are in charge of the elections.

The NUP boss also noted that the ruling NRM party is also holding similar rallies and campaigns but the EC only keeps stressing those in the opposition.

“They are straining my campaigns with these summonses. Why are they ignoring the police brutality?,” Bobi Wine said while displaying photos of President Museveni campaigning in front of large crowds.

“The NRM camp is holding rallies and campaigns but there are not being called out. I have told Justice Byabakama that he has failed,” he added.

Last week, Kyagulanyi was summoned to attend a meeting with the EC over what the Commission described as a continued violation of Standard Operating Procedures aimed at curbing the spread of the COVID-19.

Kyagulanyi who was supposed to meet the officials on Monday snubbed the summon and sent a group of representatives who the EC bounced claiming that they needed to meet the presidential aspirant in person and resummoned him to appear on Tuesday.

Kyagulanyi did not disappoint at around 10 am he arrived at the EC headquarters together with a team of other NUP officials.

During the meeting, he reminded the EC boss that he has been raising complaints to them of how the police keep brutalising him and his supporters while holding his campaigns but they always remain silent.

He cited other incidents of how he and his team have also been denied access into districts they are supposed to hold their campaigns.

In response, however, Byabakama told journalists that the EC set guidelines for all presidential candidates to observe in response to the ongoing coronavirus but many candidates more so those in the opposition are defying these measures.

Byabakama noted that despite having designated venues for their campaigns in the districts they go to, many have also succeeded in making stopovers on the roads and trading centres to address their supporters.

“This is not good because it attracts people to converge yet you are and the police are aware that there is a designated venue where a candidate is supposed to hold his campaigns with not more than 200 people,” Byabakama said.

On worries of unfair elections, the EC chairperson noted that the Commission has gone a long way in ensuring that the January 14 elections are not only free and fair but also peaceful.
