Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu is the current Minister of Energy and Mineral Development in the Ugandan 11th Cabinet.

As the former women representative for the Kiboga district and a member of the NRM party, Nankabirwa is also a member of the Business Committee. She is however professionally a fine artist.

Early Life and Education

On November 28, 1965, Ruth Nankabirwa was born. She is a native of the central Ugandan district of Kiboga where she lived with her family during her earliest years.

Ruth Nankabirwa has been happily married to Fred Ssegujja Muwanga for more than 15 years and they have six children together. 

Ruth Nankabirwa is affiliated with the Anglican religion. 

She received her primary education at Bamusuuta Primary School. She pursued both her O-Level and A-Level studies at Nabisunsa Girls’ Secondary School.

She then went on to graduate from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art. She is also a Master of Arts in Conflict Studies graduate of Makerere University.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu is a politician from Uganda who, as of 8th June 2021, has held the position of Minister of Energy and Mineral Development in the Ugandan Cabinet. 

She worked as a Constituent Assembly representative from 1994 to 1995. 

Ruth then won the election for Woman Delegate for Kiboga District in 1996, and she was subsequently appointed to the House of Representatives. From 1996 until 2021, she was in that role. 

She worked for the Office of the Prime Minister from 1998 to 2001 as Luweero Triangle’s Minister of State. 

She held the position of State Minister for Defense from 2001 until 2009 and afterwards, she was named the State Minister for Microfinance. She held the position of State Minister for Microfinance from 16th February 2009 to 27th May 2011.

From May 27th 2011 to March 1st 2015, Nankabirwa served as the State Minister for Fisheries in the Ugandan Cabinet, taking the place of Fred Mukisa, who was expelled. She retained the position until she was appointed Chief Government Whip.

Nankabirwa held the role of Chief Government Whip from 1st March 2015 to 3rd May 2021. Taking over from Justine Lumumba Kasule, who was appointed Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement political party on December 23, 2014.

She lost her position as Women MP for Kiboga District in the January 2021 elections despite telling her supporters “If the cows vote, let them vote, I want to get 120%.”

Nankabirwa manages her enterprises, such as SACCOs for savings, and ventures involving rice, motorcycles, and ambulances.
