The Soroti district in Uganda is known for its sunshine, flatness, rocky terrain, and numerous tourist attractions. It is one of the largest towns in eastern Uganda and is named for the Solot rock.

Agents of the Buganda colonial authority are said to have changed this name to Soroti.

Here are the key tourist attractions in Soroti, and some in neighboring districts.

Soroti Rock

Soroti Rock is a remarkable granite rock that dominates the middle of Soroti town in Uganda. From the top, it provides good views of Lake Kyoga and Mt. Elgon.

Religious Sites

The uniqueness of Soroti and its sacred site are both appealing. The town is home to several religious institutions, including Sikh Gurdwaras, Christian churches, Muslim mosques, Hindu temples, and Muslim shrines.

The Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, located about 100 kilometers to the east of Soroti, is the second-largest conservation protected area in Uganda, with an area of 2,275 square kilometers.

Undisturbed grassland and forested grassland make up the majority of the reserve. Additionally, kopjes—small wooded patches along rivers—exist. Some land is used for agriculture, and conversion is particularly threatening in the region along the Greek River.

Lions, elephants, black rhinos, and giraffes once had healthy numbers in the region, but these animals are now extinct there. According to reports, the final giraffe was stolen in 1995. 

UWA reintroduced 15 giraffes from Murchison Falls National Park in the reserve in October 2019. Plains zebra and common eland populations are also in danger. Grassland gazelle

In the West of Soroti is where the lake is situated. It’s one of the best places to visit in Soroti. For tourists interested in fishing or aquatic life, Lake Kyoga in Soroti has a more serene environment compared to Lake Victoria.

The surface area of Lake Kyoga, which has numerous arms, is about 1,720 km2. Three distinct areas of the lake may be distinguished as follows: the open water, which is deeper than three meters, the shallower water, which is covered in water lilies, and the marshy shoreline, which is almost entirely covered in papyrus and the invasive water hyacinth.

Lake Kyoga is blessed with about 46 fish species in it’s waters, the majority of which are indigenous. The 5-meter-long Nile crocodile, which lives in Lake Kyoga, is another animal species tourists can find.

With a height of 1,150 meters, Soroti Station is a railway station in Eastern Uganda. The settlement of Arapai lies close to the Soroti Station.

Tororo Rock

A rock structure called Tororo Rock may be found in the town of Tororo in Uganda’s Eastern Region.

It can be climbed in about an hour, making it a popular tourist destination. Four ladders are used in the final stages of the ascent, but the walk is easy. 

Non-natives are required to pay a nominal fee of UGX 10,000 per person, or roughly US$2.75 for a tour guide, which is advised.

Sipi Falls

Sipi Falls is a location with one of the most beautiful and intense falls in Uganda. Three waterfalls make up the Sipi Falls chain in eastern Uganda.

Visitors looking for an adventure can abseil or rappel from the top of the 100-meter-high Sipi Falls or attempt rock climbing on one of the many steep rocks. The proximity of the cascading water and the expansive views make for an unforgettable experience.

Nyero Rock Painting

The Nyero rock drawings are in the Kumi District of eastern Uganda, close to the Soroti District. These paintings are some of Uganda’s most significant examples of rock art.

It is thought that the locations of the rock art were holy sanctuaries for the gods. The red and white paintings are still prized by the residents of Teso, but they are still shrouded in mystery because nobody knows who painted them. 

The Iteso people of Nyero used to make sacrifices and offerings to the gods to seek relief from the rain, bad luck, blessings, and childbearing issues.

How to get to Soroti

The Soroti Airport, like the majority of airports in Uganda, does not currently handle scheduled flights, however, travelers can try to use non-scheduled flights operated by Eagle Air. 

International travelers can travel more simply by using the bus to travel from Entebbe International Airport to Soroti (around 330 km from Soroti). London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dubai, and many other international locations are served by this airport.

Taxis, rental cars, and bicycles are all available for Soroti’s local transportation needs.
