Before the January 14th polls, Mao promised that he would step down as President if his party had not garnered up to 15 legislative seats.

The Democratic Party (DP) President Nobert Mao has once again made it clear that he will not withdraw his charges as the party’s president despite massive loss in the just concluded general elections.

Before the January polls, Mao promised that he would step down as President if his party had not garnered up to 15 legislative seats.

With statistics from the elections already showing that DP failed to hit that anticipated number, Mao has disowned his promise indicating that he abandoned it even before the polls.

I won’t resign despite getting less than 15 MPs as I promised, that would be abdication. I abandoned that promise long before the 2021 elections after key DP leaders warned me never to repeat such a statement,” the DP president said while addressing journalists on Tuesday.

Also, Mao who was first to hint at how strong DP is with him as the president said that it is not long until one member from his party will rule Uganda.

He said that Ugandans are yearning for a government whose foundation is based on truth and justice and this kind of government can only be offered by those in the DP.

“Call me crazy if you will but one day, DP will lead this country. It may not be me who will be sworn in but I promise all democrats that one day DP will lead Uganda. That day is not far off because Uganda yearns for a government whose foundation is truth and justice and only DP can offer that kind of government,” Mao assured.

He, however, commented on the recent election outcomes citing that it is only a blind person that would accept that the elections were held freely and fairly.

Mao who described the election as an empty ritual said that it was marred with injustices and favouritism more so for the ruling NRM party. He disclosed that Ugandans lost out because they were denied a chance to have a new leader they voted for.

“We have gone through an empty ritual calling it an election. It would be wrong to say the 2021 elections were free and fair. It was a mere empty ritual. Unfortunately, it is Ugandans that lost out,” Mao disclosed.
