Comprehensive List of Law Schools in Uganda: Your Guide to Legal Education

Looking to enrol in a law degree program in Uganda? We have all the answers you seek. An undergraduate Bachelor of Law (LLB) from an accredited university is required to practice law in Uganda.

In Uganda, obtaining a legal degree at the undergraduate level takes four years.

Here is a list of all Law schools in Uganda.

Makerere University School of Law

One of Makerere University’s eleven constituent colleges is the School of Law. Makerere University, founded in 1922, is one of the oldest and most famous universities in Africa.

The School of Law is Uganda’s oldest institution for offering law degrees. The Department of Law, which was first created in 1968 in the Faculty of Social Sciences, gave rise to it.  

The School of Law offers the Bachelor of Laws, Master of Laws, and Doctor of Laws degree programs. 

The Department of Law and Jurisprudence, Public and Comparative Law, Environmental Law Centre, Commercial Law Department, and the Human Rights and Peace Centre (HURIPEC) are the five departments that make up the School of Law. 

The School also has several initiatives that are in the process of becoming full-fledged departments in addition to the Departments. The Public Interest Law Clinic (PILAC), the Refuge Law Project, and the Gender and Sexuality Project are some of the important ones.

Law Development Centre(LDC)

The Law Development Centre (LDC) is a higher education facility in Uganda that provides a range of legal courses lasting between one month and one year.

Only the LDC offers the Bar Course that leads to the post-graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, making it the only institution in Uganda that does so.

In the early 2000s, The LDC saw a high failure rate among students rising—up to 90% in some years. Changes that have been created by the LDC, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and the Uganda Law Society include a pre-admission written test for students, continuing education requirements for LDC lecturers, and training in instructional techniques for all academic staff.

The following courses were available at the Law Development Centre as of July 2014: Criminal Procedure, Civil Procedure, Commercial Law, Land Transaction Law, and Domestic & Family Law are considered fundamental and major disciplines. The Art of Advocacy, Judicial Conduct, Professional Ethics, Legislative Drafting, and Accountancy for Lawyers are some more topics.

Bishop Stuart University, Faculty of Law

At Bishop Stuart University’s Main Campus, the Faculty of Law officially opened its doors in August 2014. A few kilometres from the main campus, on Rwentondo Hill, the professors later purchased a brand-new place.

This ensured that it would have enough area for growth as well as autonomous, fully functional facilities like offices, libraries, lecture halls, and computer labs with enough to spare for future demands.

These programs are available through the faculty: Bachelor of Laws, Diploma in Law, Bachelor of Arts in Ethics and Human Rights, and Diploma in Ethics and Human Rights.

The faculty participates in discussions up to the national level and competes favourably in moot court contests. Both the Uganda Law Council (ULC) and the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) have accredited the faculty’s programs.

International University of East Africa Faculty of Law

Students can enrol for their first law degree in Uganda at IUEA, Faculty of Law.

Through their law degree program, IUEA helps prepare their students to address real-world issues and consolidate existing solutions in line with the rapidly changing global environment. 

By the end, the IUEA students may graduate with the characteristics that law firms and other employers look for in law graduates, including excellent writing and oral presentation, emotional intelligence, the ability to work within deadlines, the ability to work in teams, and technological know-how.

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) of Uganda has granted the International University of East Africa (IUEA) a license as a private institution of higher learning.

Gulu University, Faculty of Law

Cavendish University Uganda, Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law has made a name for itself as a top-tier law school with a faculty that is remarkable, highly qualified, and has a wide range of expertise. It boasts a cutting-edge building with a built-in Moot Courtroom to give pupils the necessary practical skills.

Because the Faculty draws students from diverse cultural backgrounds, students have an advantage in the global employment market.

Graduates from the Cavendish University Faculty of Law are well-rounded individuals who excel in both academics and extracurricular activities. 

Numerous student clubs sponsored by the faculty help students network. They include the Human Rights Club, Law Society, Legal Aid Clinic, and Rule of Law Club.

The International Association of Law Schools (IALS), which is run by Cornell Law School in the United States, recognizes the Faculty of Law as a member. IALS is a group of more than 160 law schools from over 55 countries that includes more than 7,500 legal academics.

Islamic University in Uganda, Faculty of Law

The Islamic University is found in Uganda and look located on Kumi Road. 1988 saw the founding of the university and later on, The Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda granted it accreditation.

At IUIU the Faculty of Law, both Islamic and common law are covered in their four-year study. For you to get admitted, you must at least have five O-level (UCE) passes- At least two principal A-level passes and hold a Diploma qualification from a recognized institution of Higher.

Kampala International University, Faculty of Law

In October 2002, the School of Law at Kampala International University (KIU) received accreditation from the Ugandan Law Development Council, welcoming 65 new students from the East African nations of Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

The first group of graduates entered the Law Development Centre (LDC) in Kampala the same year to pursue their post-graduate diplomas in legal training and practice. Years later, the School of Law has welcomed students from virtually all African nations as well as other countries.

The law faculty offers a four-year rigorous academic program that combines both theoretical and practical approaches. Lessons, tutorials, clinical, case studies, and group presentations are all used to teach students the curriculum’s material. Students are exposed to 13 course units in the first year, all of which are fundamental courses. 

Their main goal is to develop people who can work as legal practitioners (the Bar), judicial officers (the Bench), state solicitors, law facilitators, corporate and tax lawyers, legal advisers, consultants, company secretaries, and academics in a variety of legal professions. 

Nkumba University, School of Law

 This School aims to produce lawyers who are truly “world-class” by creating well-thought-out course units. This is accomplished through a purposeful pedagogical strategy that trains our graduates to constantly frame real-world problems whose resolution would be the most effective answers to the continuously rising social problems.

 It makes sure that its law graduates receive instruction in both the grammar and usage of the English language In addition to the legal terminology.

The School offers courses in strategic disciplines such as Legal Ethics, Clinical Legal Education, Cyber Law, and Oil and Gas Law in addition to teaching the fundamental subjects. Additionally, a wide range of elective legal topics are covered, such as international criminal justice, international humanitarian law, international human rights law, gender and the elderly law, health law and policy, and environmental law.

Uganda Christian University, Faculty of Law

This centre of legal study and research for students, academics, and researchers from Uganda, East Africa, and beyond has been developed by Uganda Christian University’s (UCU’s) Law Programme since 1998. 

Because it incorporates both Christian beliefs and high standards of ethics, the UCU program is distinctive. At UCU, the faculty of Law offers its students a 4-year law course, with a maximum completion time of six years

Constitutional, criminal, administrative, contract, administrative law, land, labour, family, criminal, insurance, human rights, environmental law, tort, equity and trusts, criminology, and penology are only a few of the subjects covered in the courses.

Uganda Pentecostal University, Faculty of Law

The four-year, interdisciplinary Bachelor of Laws program at Uganda Pentecostal University combines the social and natural sciences to produce and apply fresh insights into the effectiveness of the system of law.

They offer a Diploma in Law Programme which is a 2-year program and The Certificate in the Law Relating To Public Administration Programme which is a one-year program.

St. Augustine International University, Faculty of Law

Passionate people who want to become creative and adaptable lawyers can be enrolled at the College of Law. Each student gets enough one-on-one time with the instructors and lecturers because of the small class sizes.

In this regard, the College has hired and is continuing to hire, highly qualified lecturers, professors, and support personnel who will guide the College and its students in discovering creative solutions to pressing real-world problems.
