Over 40 Uganda police officers trained on proper usage of CCTV cameras
Over 40 Uganda police officers have been trained on how to properly operate and monitor CCTV cameras following an eight-day senior commanders’ course held at the Police headquarters in Naguru.
While giving a speech at the closing of the course, Felix Ndyomugyenyi, the Deputy Director in charge of the Human Resource Development SCP said the course was much required for senior officers who are going to supervise their juniors to ensure proper usage of the CCTV cameras countrywide.
Ndyomugenyi who called on officers to ensure they put what they have learnt into appropriate action also said that they should use the cameras to monitor and curb on the recent insecurity cases.

Of recent, CCTV cameras have been used to show footage of occurrences after they have happened something the President Museveni a few months back criticised urging that the officers operating these cameras are supposed to monitor incidents before they occur rather than after.
Museveni also following Maria Nagirinya and her driver Ronald Kitayimbwa’s murder in September directive the temporary sacking of all Police Officers in charge of the command centre in Nateete for what he referred to as negligence of duties.
“Investors cannot come where there is insecurity, so make maximum use of cameras to fight crime in your area, so that investors can come and invest in Uganda,” Ndyomugenyi said urging police officers to use the knowledge they have picked from the short course.

Meanwhile, the training course contacted by Blue Global Services from the United Kingdom was mainly targeting safer cities and included topics like concepts of operations, integrated command and control, critical incident management, communication and management contingency plans among others.

The course supported by HUAWEI, a Chinese company that was contracted by government to install CCTV cameras around the country also had participants from the Field Force Unit, Counter-Terrorism, Traffic, Flying Squad, 999 response team, Public Relations office, Commander Kampala Metropolitan Police and his deputy, All Regional Police Commanders in KMP, all Regional Traffic Officers in Kampala Metropolitan Area and all Division Police Commanders in KMP among others.
The training comes at a time when President Museveni is set to lead the opening of a new command centre where all the CCTV cameras across the country are supervised and monitored.
Recently, the command centre has been operating from Nateete police station. Meanwhile, police indicate that a total of 5,552 CCTV cameras are set to be installed in various places around the country with 3233 cameras on 1248 sites of Wakiso, Kampala and Mukono.
Coming in two types including the fixed and Pan Tilt Zoom(PTZ) cameras that rotate and views 360 degrees, the new to be installed cameras have a facial recognition feature, night vision, Global Positioning System (GPS) and automatic cleaning system.
Appropriately they also have a feature of automatic number plate recognition for reading number plates including those for motorcycles.
