Following EC’s decision to suspend campaigns in 12 districts, Patrick Amuriat Oboi has said that President Museveni is using COVID-19 as an excuse.
Following EC’s decision to suspend campaigns in 12 districts, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party presidential candidate, Patrick Amuriat Oboi has said that the incumbent president Yoweri Museveni is using COVID-19 as an excuse to deny those in the opposition a chance of holding their rallies.
Amuriat made the remarks in Sembabule while addressing his supporters. He said that before they obey the Commission’s new order, they should first explain to them how they are going to carry out their campaigns in these major towns.
The FDC candidate noted that they are also yet to receive any written statement from the commission and as a result, he assured his supporters that they will stick to the road map and hold their campaigns in every place they are supposed to go to.
“Mr Museveni knows that he’s unpopular and therefore using the EC to hide behind Covid-19 and try to stop us from going to areas where we are supposed to be campaigning,” Amuriat said.
“The FDC has not received any official communication. However, should this rumor turn out to be true then the Electoral Commission has to explain to us how they expect us to carry out our campaigns in these major towns. As far as we are concerned, tomorrow we are in Jinja and we will be in Tororo and Kampala on the days we are scheduled to be there.”
POA also, noted that Museveni has lost majority support in most of the districts where campaigns have been suspended and he is utilising the COVID-19 situation to make self-centred decisions.

Amuriat however, explained that they are ready to fight to see that this does not happen. He noted that whether Museveni likes it or not they are not going to be intimidated into obeying pointless laws.
“I think with these kinds of orders we are preparing ourselves for a real fight with the electoral commission and Uganda police force and I think these are just signs of fear. Mr Museveni knows that he has become unpopular. We have got all the evidence that he no longer has the support of the Ugandans and therefore he is trying to hide behind the Covid-19 and also trying to deter us from going to areas where should have campaigns at our expense.”
“So this is a matter we are going to take up and when the electoral commission finally writes to us, we are going to do what it takes as a combined opposition to resist this kind of thing. Whether Museveni likes it or not we are going to enter Kampala, whether he likes it or not, we shall be in Jinja and other major towns where he seeks to stop us from meeting the people,” POA added.
