It’s cowardly beating women, I have been with Janet for 47 years, but I have never pushed or beaten her – President Museveni
President Yoweri Museveni has criticized men beating up their women stressing that the act is only done by cowards who fear to fight fellow men but want to display their strength through domestic violence.
Museveni who made the remarks yesterday during the International Women’s Day celebrations held in Mbale cautioned men to stop beating their women.
He also challenged them to borrow a leaf from his marriage with the first lady Janet Museveni whom he has never pushed, beaten or violated for the 47 years they have lived together.
He further advised men who feel they are so strong to consider looking for other men to fight with other wasting time and all their energy on people like women who are naturally born weak and fearful.

This year’s International Women’s Day celebrations held in Mbale were organized under the theme, celebrating 25 years of the 1995 Constitution: Milestones on promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in Uganda.
As one of the main guest speakers, Museveni who was very critical about the increasing cases of domestic violence in the country said that women empowerment can best be achieved through economic Independence and that his government has put in place several initiatives to in a bid to try and empower women not only economically but also socially and politically.
Museveni who was first to defend his government’s work in promoting women’s rights pinpointed among others the 1.5 points added to girls joining public universities, equal opportunities for women in the armed forces and a high number of women in parliament as some of the favours they have put on board to give women hope.
Meanwhile, he called upon different equality promoting organizations including the police to take issues discriminating women very seriously.
Besides, he advised the public and women who are stressed to any kind of violence or torture to report the cases to those concerned.
