I am going to campaign for you if your message is for liberation – Besigye hints on allying with Kyagulanyi.

While appearing on NBS TV’s Morning Breeze programme on Monday, the former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Dr Kizza Besigye said that he will only ally (campaign) with candidates who are focused on taking Uganda forward.

Besigye made the remarks in response to a question of who he will support in the coming 2021 presidential elections.

He said that he will not vote for candidates basing on their connection to a certain party but the messages their manifestos hold.

“I will only campaign for those who want to take power, not occupy offices. I am not going to campaign for you just because you are saying you are FDC. I am going to campaign for you if your message is for liberation,” Besigye mentioned.

“You will never win by compliance. This is why we have advocated for defiance. We need to win power, and then power will give us the offices.”

Besigye’s remarks come at a time when presidential candidates started their official campaigns on November 9 with FDC’s flag bearer, Patrick Oboi Amuriat touring areas of Iganga district to seek political support.

In his speech to the people of Iganga, Amuriat promised to establish a national referral hospital in the area if he is voted into power in the 2021 presidential election. He said that Iganga just like all districts in Uganda they have a right to better health services.

Others including Yoweri Museveni the National Resistance Movement flag bearer also started his political campaign tour in Luweero district while the National Unity Platform party flag bearerRobert Kyagulanyi is set to kickstart his campaigns in Arua district on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission continues to urge all presidential candidates to mainly conduct virtual campaigns in a bid to avoid mass gatherings and big crowds which might culminate into the further spread of the virus.

While addressing journalists earlier on the EC boss, Simon Byabakama said that presidential hopefuls should only hold their campaigns provided they guarantee the safety of participants, against exposure to the Covid-19 pandemic.
