Minister Amongi said due to delays in processing the lists of beneficiaries, the government saw it necessary to postpone the process.

Betty Amongi, the Minister for Gender, has announced that vulnerable Ugandans will begin receiving the Covid relief cash at 10 am on Thursday.

In the latest statement, the Minister for Gender, Betty Amongi has said vulnerable Ugandans will start receiving the Covid relief cash worth sh100,000 on Thursday at 10 am.

While addressing a press conference on Tuesday at the Uganda Media Centre, Amongi said due to delays in processing the lists of beneficiaries, the government saw it necessary to postpone the process.

She said the government is relying on lists data produced by town clerks.

In particular, she pinpointed districts including Kampala whose data is yet to be tabulated into the records.

Amongi noted that of the 501,107 households expected to benefit, information for only 218,900 households has so far been uploaded to the system.

“The basis of payment to beneficiaries is availability of data which is supposed to be received through town clerks. We would then be able to start payment on the basis of the substantial data received. However, by 2pm today, we had received 218,900 households uploaded to our system as the Ministry of Gender out of the 501,107 beneficiaries,” Amongi said.

“The meeting we had this morning, they (KCCA officials) assured us data is with them at town council and that 70% has been collected at division level and would be able to send it to the ministry. When we get this data today, we will be able to reach number of 50% of total number we expect,” Among promised.

“By tomorrow morning, we expect 70% of the data from across the country to be uploaded. On Thursday, July, 8, 2021, the function to launch the disbursement will be presided over by the Prime Minister at 10am. The first beneficiaries will start receiving their money on Thursday at 10am,” she added.

Minister Amongi said due to delays in processing the lists of beneficiaries, the government saw it necessary to postpone the process.

Among others, she pinpointed the people whose jobs have been terribly hit including bartenders and street vendors, boda boda riders, artists without forgetting those who reside in poor communities.

“The vulnerable are known, we have people who have not been working for over a year, the bartenders, people who have been selling items on the street, street children and our poor communities,” Nabbanja explained estimating about two million beneficiaries.

“Two million people will receive cash relief in Uganda. People in the villages are sorted, they have food. Ugandans are smart, they can look after themselves, the government just decided to lend a hand. The names of the vulnerable Ugandans are already being displayed. The process is taking long, allow us to be slow but sure. By Friday many will have received their money.”
